It looks like it's pretty close to your house. I'd start by figuring out how far away a firepit needs to be. It also looks like it's in an awkward place. If a little garden makes sense, that's what I'd do, but if that would be in the way, I'd make it into a decorative patch, because you're unlikely to match the existing patio.

Do you WANT a fire pit? That seems like a reasonable use of that spot. Or you could dig out the rocks, add some good garden soil, and plant something there.

Why don’t you want cement? That’s what I would do. A fairly competent person could mix and pour concrete in that spot. After a badly-needed powerwashing of the rest of the concrete, I think it would look just fine.

We would like to turn it into a fire pit (or at least our teenagers would lol) but the question is- is it too close to our house to be safe? and what would we need to do to it if yes.

If you mean firepit as in throw down some bricks or a ring and start burning ragers there, then no. Not safe, too close to the house. But you probably could have a small tabletop pit there, I know folks that have ones like this pretty close to the house. Meant for casual ambiance burning rather than a campfire experience.

If your teens have troubles controling their pyro, and I am a pyro and understand that... then maybe you could consider having a propane or gel tabletop firepit. You still get a nice little fire, but it's more controlled. Many smaller chimineas can be safer for contained wood burning.

Agree with bees above. It’s been my experience that teenagers + firepits = disaster.

One of my sons and I are pyros. Did you know that open flames can literally melt home siding? Unfortunately I learned that the hard way.
