The pull chain switch is above both the white shade and black hardware. Both the above will have to be removed, then the bottom housing of the actual fan removed, usually that is 2-3 screws. Then remove the old switch, cut the wires to it, reattach the new switch wires with wire nuts and re-install/assemble everything. You will have to decide if all this scares you or not, it's a fairly easy task for me. ;)

I was able to remove the white shade and below is a picture of the inside. Red arrow is where the pull chain was and I can see a screw near green arrow. Once I unscrew, will it be in the white box that you see or will it be against the ceiling hardware?

I currently turned off breaker switch and there is no electricity to this fixture. if I unscrew and work on replacing the fan, if it takes me longer than anticipated, is it safe to turn the breaker without turning on the power switch to the fixture? i am hoping it is not a fire hazard

It appears that if you loosen the green-arrow screw and turn the white cap slightly counterclockwise that you will be able to remove the white cap, expose the innards and, hopefully, see the switch to which the pull chain was connected. HOWEVER, there may be a red-arrow nut that's also holding the white cap in place that you'll also need to remove.

Yes.

I would tape off all power wires or use wire nuts, if you were not going to have it all finished before you turned on the breaker.

I was able to detach the white housing. Pictures above.

1. During the process I scratched and removed a piece of foil. What is its significance?

2. I need to untangle those wires to identify the fan switch under and in the middle of that mess! Any suggestions?

Thank you all! I was able to identify and remove the bad fan switch. I am now going to go to the home improvement store to get the new switch and install it. Will keep you posted.

At last! Thanks to all of your help, I was able to replace the fan switch with a new one and the best part is after installing the switch, fixture works! :)

Due to the size difference between old switch and new one, I had to wrestle with the wiring to fit them all snug inside the housing.
