Lighting for High Ceilings

Hi all,

We have 25-30 foot high ceilings over a large room that encompasses the kitchen, breakfast nook, and family room. However, the focus of the lighting is mainly on the kitchen as the nook has a chandelier and the family room has additional light fixtures. These are old track lights (circa early 1990s) that are held up by long extension poles and we're looking at options for updating them.

Rather than simply updating the track heads, we're wondering if you guys have any ideas as to what sort of lights would work here. Links to options would be helpful. It's far too high for recessed lighting to work so that's not something we want to consider but open to suggestions.

Your room requires lighting that gets the fixtures down nearer the cabinets and work surfaces that need to be illuminated. The track lights are designed to focus the light at the cabinet face or the countertops.

In this kitchen below the fixture extended on metal stems places the fixture closer to the appropriate height in the kitchen but the lights themselves only supply general illumination, not light directed at surface.

With track lights, you can use the can lights or add adapters that allow you to install hanging pendants from the track.

You must decide what's important to illuminate in the kitchen and if the fixtures should remain white to fade into the ceiling or be a contrasting color so they stand out.

I like the architecture of the space. It has held up over time. The cabinets, counters and backsplash not so much. I'm not sure why these cabinets have crown molding at the top. They look incongruous in the space. I would have selected contemporary white cabinets with flush doors.

I would suggest your consider a style for your kitchen more like what you see below.

Thank you, so are you thinking maybe a singular column of pendant chandeliers or two side-by-side? Not sure if that would look chaotic, but I like the look!

With the space you have I don't think two side by side would look chaotic at all!

However I also do like the look of a singular column in a pattern.

Either a pattern or a cluster would both look great in your kitchen. All up to whichever you like best

Love the ideas! I think the modern style lighting options would fit within the home. I didn't consider the aspect of focused lighting vs. general illumination.

Would it be unusual to have a combination of focused lighting (track lights or hanging pendants) along with some of the more ambient illuminated lighting options as shown? Beverly made a good point about losing focused lighting, especially in the kitchen area.

Majid I don't think having a combo of focused lighting along with some ambient iluminated lighting would be unusual. You seem to be a forward thinker; I like the idea of innovating with both styles!
