Yes. You could have left it on the stem until it dried and then planted the seeds. I don't think that they will mature enough to be viable at this stage though but what the hey, you won't be out anything if you tried it.

Thanks for the confirmation Gary. None of the flowers were open all the way, they were dying back, but I got a whiff of one and they are definitely fragrant.

debra go knock on the door. You will probably make their day. Or year. If they have lots of hostas bring a drink you may be there a while.

plantaginea is more apple green..

royal standard is a more common or normal green....

a 6 inch flower giving a 6 inch seed pod.. go figure....

one time in 20 years.. didn't they have enough season to mature in my MI ... between August bloom and pod killing freeze in late October.. need 60 or 90 days to ripen.. most years that wont happen in MI ...

the one year it did.. i grew out the seeds.... and go figure on this species... they were all exact replicas of momma [sorta the definition of a species] .. until they died in garage .. when i forgot about them.. because i hosted the 1999 international hosta convention in my Livonia MI garden... along with others of course ...

when the same tour happened in my tecumseh mi garden.. 10 years later ...there were no plantiginea seedlings... and there were.. .. with the severe drought.. no flowers.. and no pods.... the same as this year ....

the collection of 1650 hosta is down to one sum and substance.. and one plantiginea... hooorah ...

Looks like my plantiginea seeds will not mature before a frost. What's the odds of them ripening in a controlled climate by cutting and putting in water?
