Round or square? Where are you setting the columns on the porch and where will they rest at the top? This will matter as they need to look appropriate. For this house I would most likely just use a 6" square colonial porch post not a column.

Yes square they will be in the same spot . Just want them to look larger so wasn’t sure to do 6 inch or 8 inch

6" would be my choice. I have not seen 8" porch posts before and do not think the sizing would look correct anyway.

A wider walkway, done with pavers or brick, would add a lot to the curb appeal.

When sizing columns or posts the old rule of thumb is usually 1' Height = 1" column diameter.

I would not spend a dime on new columns. Not enough bang for the buck. Will not increase the value of the home.

I would hire a professional landscape designer & implement landscaping and exterior lighting as funds permit.

Looking at the scalloped effect on that roof edge, I think the support columns, as is, are appropriate for your raised ranch.

This house has been used so much because it is a great inspiration photo. I'd remove the shutters and paint the trim and siding just as what you see,

If proportions are your concern, evaluate the width of the fake shutters compared to the width of the window they are expected to cover.

Why are there two different bricks?

I do not like the placement of the posts no matter what . IMO fix that at the same time The shutter are too small and IMO white is the wrong color for the siding . To me this really is not a colonial but a side splitlevel . I would lose the shutters paint the siding a darker gray to wotk with the brick and stop thinking colonial and square posts 6" and lined up to go with the door and windows . It might be that the angle is what is bugging me so a dead on photo might be for me at least better .The landscaping is what will bring this home to life for sure

Hi Mark we just bought this house. The bricks are so strange yes two different types ughhh. I love natural brick but these are so ugly.
Patricia- We can’t get rid of the posts they support the roof. What would you suggest? And we want to keep the white siding bc of our budget. Thanks :)

Am thinking your new columns should be at least 12" square. Would you consider adding brick bases to them o give more weight. Will suggest you paint your brick since there are two different types used. This should give your house a more cohesive look.

Yes we plan on painting the door black and lime washing all the brick using Romabio Bianca white…I love natural brick and wish it was all the same on this house!! Not sure why previous owners did this with 2 different colors of bricks ughhh

Go big on those columns and you will love the look. Great planto paint or lime wash all the brick to match. You will enjoy the look.

Thanks so much! Yes I saw this photo. Our neighbor has 6 inch posts out house sits back 6 inch looks too small from the street. I’m gonna go with 8 inch like the photo above..

You can of course keep the posts for function but they seem to be in the wrong spots but I do need to see the house front on not at an angle.
