How about a rectangular rug and an oval coffee table? Or two round, nested coffee tables. Or an ottoman instead of a coffee table. Or - I don't know your style, but look at the coffee table below that has rounded ends:

Plants, a throw for the sofa bed and a large round natural basket or two are easy ways to soften a room. The view outside the French doors also impacts the feel of the room. If it's a patio with a wall or fence, you can also soften that space with plants and furniture.

Right now we’re full of boxes due to cabinetry being worked on in the other room but I can post when that’s done…I have the throw, a round side table, round baskets, all great suggestions…and note taken about no round rug. Don’t want coffee table. I want a light colored rug but rolling the desk chair over it could be a problem?

If you want to have something not regular shape why not do a big cowhide IMO a round rug will not be a good choice in that space . Is this a room for an office , a LR or what ? It seems to be that the sofa is facing nothing but a desk why is the desk there and so long > Ineed mor einfo as to how this space is used .IMO a round coffee table in front of a long rectangular sofa is kind of useless have you looked at noguchi coffee tables if softer lines are what you want then just a nice interesting rectangular rug with some really cool color or pattern to make the space interesting and softer .I just reread the post and you do not want a coffee table so then you need end tables and lighting and I still need info.
