I LOVE this dahlia!

I bought this dahlia last year and I just want to share it's absolute gorgeousness! It is Great Silence. I can't tell you how much I love this dahlia. It positively GLOWS. The colors are spectacular - pink, orange, yellow, and the plant is fairly prolific - although I would grow them even if there were only one bloom per plant lol!


I can't seem to accurately capture it's beautiful color with my phone, but this is the closest to real life picture I have:

It fades as it ages, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. The colors aren't as vibrant as it ages, but it fades to a quite nice pastel mix.


As someone who is always making little bouquets for myself, work, friends, etc., one thing I like is how it brings colors together. Here is it with a dark pink zinnia (probably Benary's Giant Carmine Rose), pink cosmos, zinnia Queeny Lemon Peach, and an orange dahila that is .... Tropical Sunset?? Can't remember the orange dahlia, but I feel like Great Silence picks up the color of all of those other blooms. And you can see that the Great Silence on the left, cut that morning, is more vibrant than the one on the right, cut two days earlier, which has faded to a more pastel mix.

    Lol rosa, no worries at all. I always enjoy your posts, and we all have things we won't or can't grow, or just don't like. I was never a big zinnia fan, but when I sold bouquets I started planting them, and now I've grown to really like them, even if for nothing more than their long vase life.


    But I do love dahlias lol. Every fall and spring I curse them and wonder why I'm doing all this darn work (usually in miserably cold and/or wet weather) but come late summer I know why!


    newbie, if you've never grown Creme de Cassis before I think you'll love it. It's a more unusual dahlia, and always got comments when I put it in bouquets. If I recall, the back of the petals was a darker color than the front. Sadly I lost the tubers and haven't bought new ones yet. And I love Thomas Edison. Although truth be told, I'm not a great labeller and I do get confused between TE and Diva, both of which I had. Honestly I think now I only have one of them and I do think it's TE (I think Diva is a smaller bloom and more reddish purple).

    Crazy Love is quite nice - I will have to put that one on my list.


    Oldbat I didn't know those varieties came in seed. Granted I haven't looked closely lately, but other than Bishop's Children, I've only seen dahlia seed for lower-growing mixes, not named varieties. Maybe I have to pay more attention! Good luck with your germination!

      Thanks for sharing. It is glorious — I adore blooms with luminescent quality. I bet that near dusk it stands out.

      Petalique I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I really do think it's lovely. And consistent - the same beautiful blooms this year as last year.

      I also tried one that seemed similar in photos on some websites, called American Dawn. Not even close. The colors of that look... IDK, kind of muddy. I was disappointed but take solace in my Great Silence lol.

      Yes, I do too (like it) but in someone else's garden. I am not going to grow any dahlias next year (the beds have already vanished, leaving me with just the ones in pots) so I am just going to have to enjoy my forum mate's choices..

      Linda I purchased my tubers from Longfield Gardens (here).


      I kind of don't like that they sell their tubers in twos and threes (I have a limited budget so I'd rather buy singles and get more and varied tubers) but I have been happy with the quality of the tubers.

      Hi - I love the pictures! This year, while I dug out and labeled my favorite tubers, I then left them in the (unheated) greenhouse for the winter. In a way, it was a good thing, because after a few seasons of the same dahlias, I was ready for a change. I ordered a combination of tubers from ebay and also 3 seed varieties, including Great Silence, Daisy Duke and Brown Sugar. Germination has not been optimal but I have about 6 of each. I had really good luck growing from seed last year and am hopeful about this year's seedlings. I found my tubers started early were behind the plants started from seed.

      This spring I bought some new dahlia tubersfrom home depot: Thomas Edison, Blue Boy, Crazy Love and Crème de Cassis. Also got a bag from Costco: heatwave and dynamite. The 4 from HomeDepot already sprouted.

      No dahlias or zinnias for me this year. TBH, I don't actually like them that much (shock!) but they filled a space and were so easy to keep (and sow)year on year, I would grow them for cut flowers for others. I dunno - tastes change, we get older and yearn for something a bit ineffable, nostalgic, redolent with place and memory...and for me, this manifests as simple wilder, smaller versions of many of our garden flowers...or summat. Even the tulips are slowly being replaced with their daintier species and I frankly detest frilly hybrid tea roses and those enormous cabbagey things.

      Course, this is me, writing now. Next week, who knows, but I have slowly been working towards a sort of theme and look. We shall see.

      eta: Good grief, i apologise for such self-indulgent twaddle all over your thread, Dee. Your dahlia is actuallly a beautiful colour and I wish you the joy of it in your garden.


      FWIW, I have no such refined and austere tastes in my own personal deportment or my home decor!!!

      @diggerdee zone 6 CT, very beautiful bouquet.

      I looked at the top picture and I feel that my No-ID dahlia could be Great Silence.

      The small one in the front might look pinker, but sometimes it has more tint of orange. The back ones are another noid which are 10 inches I think a dinner plate

      The flowers are anywhere fro 4-6 inches.
