Need fireplace accent wall suggestions

last year

Hellos, we are almost ready to
Hi, we just moved in and need advice on window treatments, accent wall at fireplace, and ideas for chandlier above the stairs. attached are the pics of the house. we brought our new sofa, but the dining table is old. Do you think the glass table still looks good ? I will definitely change the chairs, please suggest chairs and bar stools, I am looking for more of a modern look
please advise on the window treatments we are leaning towards zebra blinds to the side windows and roller shades to the sliding doors and leaving the top windows open, could you please advise if plain white zebra and plain white roller shades to the sliding doors work we'll? But I'm confused if it looks all neutral and plain, the wooden flooring is oak and the walls are white, sofa is white, but I want to add some color to the area, we have island cabinets in blue thinking of blue accessories like pillows on sofa, barstools .. do you think I can also add a blue area rug? The area rug that is in the pictures is an old one, planning to change that too ? Will it be too bold to have a blue rug or any other recommendations? I also need advice with the chandelier above the stairs and accent wall near the fireplace.I know it's a lot to ask, but I'm really confused with all the things, so based on the suggestions I will order one at a time and see,
Thanks in advance.

I'd place the round table under the chandelier for starters.

The chandelier seems too small for the vast volume of the space. I'd consider a multi tier fixture to make a statement.

I think the rug should be turned to flow across the room

I'd add a large fan to the ceiling.

It's unfortunate the space allowed for the TV is so very small.

I would not try to make an "accent wall" here, but just hang nice art over the fireplace. Then you could use the niche to the left for plants, shelves, firewood, or a variety of things.

Wait, is a TV supposed to go in this room?

  • last year

Hi thank you for the suggestions yes I have big ceiling fan that is gonna come here, i have already ordered but I am looking for some modern chandliers in dining as well as over the stairs so a pro can come and install all at once, any recommendations with links would be great.

Also I am planning to keep a TV above the fire place, the tile that is currently surrounding the fire place is temporary thing which I need to mandatorily take from the builder, so looking for accent wall ideas above the fire place which is going to be the point of focus in the living area.

Also I am planning to move the chandlier above the dining table towards the window wall, if it is centered then I feel the room is crowded so if I move it towards the window wall the area looks more open and the little kids can run in place, what do you suggest ?

I wouldn't do an accent wall in that space. There's no clear end point with the oversized nook and door to the hallway (and those appear different heights). You've got other features in the room enough-the iron railing, the wall of windows (that's the room's key focus actually) and an eye-catching rug.

If you don't like the current fireplace tile, I'd change it to something wall colored and fill the space between the hall doorway and niche side to side, add a simple mantel in a pale oak to coordinate with the floor (tile only up to the mantel) and use an articulating wall mount for the TV since it's a high placement for a TV.

We have this fan ordered to the living area, it is 72 inch but has only 5 wings but has gold panel, does it looks good?

  • last year

Or this fan in white and gold goes or black gold and more modern like works ?

A 54" ceiling fan is the wrong size for the scale of the room.

This is a 54" ceiling fan and you can see that the fan is not large enough for the room.

I wouldn't consider anything less than 65" in diameter

Yes I have purchased 72 inch black fan with 5 wings like the above shared picture but now thinking if white one with 8 or more wings might give a better look, thoughts plz

For Window treatments going with light rattan shades the color of the flooring in dining area with white sheers to the sliding doors give a modern look? What about dark brown or lite black zebra shades with white drapes as the whole area is in lite colors , will it be too much ?

Rug is my old rug and I'm planning to change it can you suggest me a rug that goes well here and a wall painting, I really don't want to bring in reds or dark browns which was my old color scheme and we all want to see some fresh colors in here. Based on the rug i can also add the back wall decor i assume, I have black and white or blues in my mind what do you think ?

Do you recommend keeping the dining table in the center vs pushing it to the side and change the chandelier to the side ? We thought moving it to the side gives more space in the area for kids to run around and i can also add bar stools near the counter top.

I have plans to change the dining table as well later does rectangle table works here with beige or black chairs and the same colored stools at the counter top ?

It would've been helpful to know you were getting rid of the rug and don't like the colors scheme. Everyone ran around trying to coordinate with that rug. You need an in-person decorator to deal with such a large space right after you moved in. These are my suggestions but in no way at the level of help you need.

--The window treatment I showed in dining area--rattan shades plus sheers in between and sheers on the sliding doors are a good, neutral background. Zebra pattern? Is that what you meant? With the tall windows that would overwhelm the space.

--Put the round table in the middle, which is what Beverly said. The dining furniture looks terrible shoved over there. Get modern style lower back chairs that can be completely pushed in. Legs should match the table. The lighting above should be centered for many reasons: symmetry, centered lighting, and more. Get a large, dramatic light fixture . Here is a great look for your space.

Notice the colorful art in the background. I would look at art prints on society6.com where you can specify the colors you like and the size. Put a large horizontal one over the fireplace. Then others at eye level around the space. As you settle in, you can buy original modern art work that you love. Then choose a rug in same palette--blue and tan, for example. Again, neutral window treatments highlight art and furniture and don't overwhelm the room.

Society6. This looks good in a room with tall ceilings, especially on a tall fireplace like yours.

Rug with same palette as the art print.

I think you understand the principles of a large, tall space: Bold, colorful rugs and art, subtle window treatments; modern neutral furnishings.

I apologize that the rug portion was confusing but I have mentioned in my first post that I wanted to change my rug as it is a old one and asked if I can go with the blue colored rug instead or asked for any recommendations regarding the rug as well.

Yes I definitely liked the shades you shared , I will go with those , the zebra blinds I mentioned is just the type of blinds but not the zebra pattern, I have attached the picture

And wow I really like the dining table picture you shared with the colorful art and the low back chairs, whiteshades , chandlier and the area rug, do you by any chance have the links of it, so I can get them

Can i go with the tan colored chairs like the ones in the picture ? Also do you think rectangular table looks good in this area or still the circle ?

I am really thankful for all the advices, that is really giving me ideas on how to make my house a beautiful home.

My only comment, I think a blue rug would look good but don’t make the mistake I made, I bought a beautiful indigo wool rug, it looks great but it shows EVERYTHING! I vacuum it everyday even though no pets or children in house. Get something variegated if possible. Take your time with it all.

Get a patterned rug that echoes dramatic art work over the fireplace. There are already a lot of neutrals, so art and a patterned rug would define spaces.

A round table is friendlier and leaves more room to move around it. Is that a round table you have? If so, keep it but get new chairs.

I did look up zebra shades. They will be costly, and they will often have to be down. A more budget friendly, softer solution are the the rattan shade/white sheers across dining area and white sheers across sliding door. The rattan will add a natural element to the very polished surfaces you have everywhere. In huge spaces, you need texture and softness to add some coziness at the living level via art, textured rugs and pillows, upholstered pieces, some wood pieces with modern shapes.

Thank you very much for getting back on this, yes I really like the idea of rattan shades and white sheers, I will try to bring them in to my living room, I love to add natural elements to my space, do you have recommendations for any budget friendly place to purchase both blinds and sheers and do you also recommend covering the top windows with blinds and sheers or just sheers or leave those open ?

  • last year

Try JC Penney, Lowe's, or Home Depot for budget friendly shades and sheers. Sheers are not costly. Window treatments, though, add up. Get attractive black modern rods. It might be possible to get one rod for all three windows and open your sheers as needed.

Leave your top windows open to the sky! To echo the sky in your art, think about getting a dramatic skyscape print, horizontal, for over your fireplace. The one with a bird in the sky in my other posting is great on a tall fireplace. Here's another gorgeous one is from Etsy. Search words on Etsy, society6, and other art sites are: "skyscape, horizontal, abstract, graphic, clouds" etc. Get simple frames that just edge the prints.

Other smaller art around the room should be simple and graphic since you have such a large space>

Then a rug with these colors--tan, ivory, blue

One last thing about dining area--round table in the middle, more modern chairs as suggested. Do leave current chandelier where it is. It's attractive and echoes your kitchen pendants. Nothing should be off to the side. As it is, it looks as if someone pushed everything to the wall so they could vacuum. The children can run around the table! If you get a round new table, get one with leaves that will turn it into an oval when you entertain then just turn it the other way.

Art: Now that I have a closer look of your gold finish chandelier, then the art with the bird in flight from society6 would also echo your light fixtures and add a glow to the room. The first few prints are also from society6.com. Keep frames very, very simple--edge framing in same color as shades and wood floor if they go well with image.

Some blues and golds to pick up gold lighting finishes. Then use this palette for patterned rug.
