Help Warming Up New Dining Room

last year

We recently purchased and are renovating an apartment. This is the dining room so far but it feels a bit cold to me. I would love input on how to warm up the space (rugs, curtains, lights, plants, etc.)

I love the light but not that big or that high . IMO the table could be wood topped and you need drapes on the window and another piece of art on that wall across from the window I am not a lover of rugs in DRs I would do the wood table under the new art not blocking the wallpaper feature .

You probably don't want to replace your flooring, but having to work with that gray LVP everywhere is going to be a downer. I like the wallpaper, built-ins and table separately, but together they are too much black and white. A larger, more substantial buffet/console in a warm wood color on the end wall with the wallpaper would help, as would drapes and a rug. But a warm wood is going to fight the gray flooring, so choose carefully. Are there any colors used in adjoining rooms that you could bring in using a rug?

OOOO! Love it. And I like Beverly's idea of bringing in some natural textures with the rug and plants. The room looks like it could handle a larger table. Maybe bring in a Parsons style (or similar) wood table?

Look at these for the table, not the decor:

Did you add the mural or was it already there? The mural looks very traditional, but your furniture and lighting are very modern? The chandelier over the table is lost in the mural pattern, but no idea would work there. The wood table in your second posted photo just doesn’t work with the mural and the wood tone isn’t right. Plants and black-edged rug in the above post by BeverlyFLADeziner do help warm it up.

Thank you for all of the great feedback! Yes, unfortunately replacing the floors is not in the cards right now so I am working with it. I will definitely be adding drapes and greenery as well as a rug. I am thinking of a natural rug or a neutral color with some texture, any thoughts? I do like the one above too. We did add the mural and I love it and I agree about the console. I was thinking of a dark walnut console/buffet to add warmth. The living room is connected and there is a paprika/spice-colored velvet sofa there at the moment. I was thinking to add pops of peacock blue as well.

You boxed yourself into a perfectly designed space that happens to be cool. The light, table, built-ins, and mural are all perfection together. I wouldn't mess with this too much by throwing in natural and warm elements.

Instead think about texture more so than warmth. I'd find a perfect piece of artwork to hang above the heater. (Something with a warn vintage wood frame.) Get a cool colored but deep pile rug. It will make the room feel a bit more soft and inviting without forcing warmth and nature into this space. Perhaps get a long, low, warn in vintage bench for along the back wall.

Decide if you want to continue/play up its simplicity. The first instinct is to fill with accessories, but I’d be aiming for balance and creating a connection. The dining table feels lost in the room and the oversized light (which I love) doesn’t help. A substantial sideboard will inject some visual weight, but a new table down the road would make a big difference.

    (You wouldn’t need art above)

Around accessorizing, suggest pulling in your paprika with a simple textured rug.

I’d look for simplicity in art, so as not to take away from the lovely wallpaper.

If adding a plant, the type and pot will have an influence.

I would add a big, low pile, beautiful rug. It can work with the neutrals you inherited, but as long as it’s not super thick, you can warm up the space with it.

My experience with dining room rugs is that the height of the wool is a critical factor in keeping it clean. I wouldn’t use a textured (sisal) rug in there for that reason.

I see Paris in your photo, so would stick with black and white, plants, and a touch of color on the table. A rug with a border would shrink the visual space surrounding the small table so it looks less lost. I can't tell how much room there is between the heater and the mural wall; is there enough for an antique or custom mantel-like surround for a tongue-in-cheek touch? Antique grillwork panels on the cabinet doors would add interest on the left to balance the rest of the room. The ceiling fixture does come in black; don't know if you could/would exchange it. (And no idea whether this fits at all with the rest of the house!)
