I think it could be kept in a very large pot. You could push that pot up next to a fence or trellis so that it could meander on it..maybe even a tree as long as it wasnt too shady. I like putting vines, roses etc against trees that lose their leaves in winter then the potted plant will get sun in winter and maybe a little shade and slanted sun in the summer.

Another thing I have done is to put a few holes around the bottom sides of the pot. Dig a hole about half the height of the pot and sink it. This will keep wind from knocking it down and still allow the pot to drain, roots to escape and thus anchor the pot. I used to do this a lot with things I wanted to dig up and protect in winter like plumeria, very tropical passifloras etc..you are in a warm zone so no need to worry about that with roses, but it can keep roots cooler and pots anchored. It all9ws the plant/rose to think it is in the ground and it will get big and beautiful. I kept MAC that way happily.

I know some folks in S. FL have raised beds for roses even if they are small ones like around each individual rose, due to not being able to plant in the hard rock underneath their soil.

I would try to use at least a 30inch pot for long term. Mel’s Heritage is a HUGE rose and would appreciate the space.

I am not sure about the black spot. I wouldn't bother waiting to place it in its forever home. It is a very vigorous rose that can grow 10 feet in one year. Place it in the big pot and enjoy it.
