Looks like a fullmoon maple and like other Asian maples, is easily affected by water stress. So not an uncommon issue at this late date in the season after a hot, dry summer. To avoid happening next summer, provide periodic deep watering. These maples really dislike drying out and especially in areas with high summer heat.
