Does this stick vacuum exist? Corded, NO handheld attached at top

last year

Hello, can anyone tell me if what I want exists? I would like a corded stick vacuum that works on both hard floor and carpet door mats and small area rugs so it will need a beater brush or fins. I do not need a hand held attachment so don't care if it comes with one, but most especially do not want a vacuum that has a handheld attached at the very top of the stick where it will be bulky, awkward, and unwieldy. Budget max $250. I have done a fair amount of research and can't find one that has a beater brush but does not have a handheld attached at the top. I would be most grateful for any guidance, and thank you for reading this.

Miele used to make one called the Quick Step that was corded and bagged. You could use it with a Miele powerhead if you already owned one or just buy one as an accessory. Some vac shops might still have old stock. I had one for a condo and it was great.

Thank you, M H, I will check that out.

Edited: Looks like Amazon has one for $399, a bit above my budget. Thanks again.

The BISSELL Featherweight™ PowerBrush Vacuum 2773A meets your requirements but in CR's tests it performed poorly on carpets. However at $50 you could give it a try.

CR didn't test it but Walmart also sells the BISSELL 3-in-1 Turbo Lightweight Stick Vacuum 2610 which is incredibly cheap at $33.

I'd read owners' reviews on the Walmart website before buying either.

wdccruise, it looks like the brush can't be turned off on the PowerBrush model and apparently that's not good for hard floors. (I should have researched that already.) The 3-in-1 is a possibility though I can't tell from the listing if it has a brush. Maybe I'm better off with a model that doesn't have one anyway. Thank you for the recommendations.

Have you considered a robot vacuum? I have the eufy Anker RoboVac X8 ($200) and it really is quite wonderful. After it mapped the two floors and I blocked the areas I didn't want vacuumed on the map, it works reliably. I particularly like that it will vacuum areas that are hard to reach with a hand vacuum cleaner such as under a bed. There are a few areas it can't reach so I just "swiffer" those areas before I start the RoboVac. (I don't have any carpets.)

"it looks like the brush can't be turned off on the PowerBrush model and apparently that's not good for hard floors."

The RoboVac's brush is always on but I haven't noticed that that has caused by problems with my white oak or tile floors.

wdcruise, I hadn't really thought of a robot but it's something to consider. I'll have to find out if they can go from hard floors to doormats and area rugs. I'm also a little concerned about the tripping hazard. Thanks for the suggestion.

Antique (in the legal automobile age sense) Kirby vacuum cleaners have a power brush, bag, cord, and handle like you describe. The brush head can be adjusted using foot pedals to the desired height. It is possible to disable the rubber band that connects the brush to the motor drive, but I haven't tried to deliberately disable it for that purpose.

I bought mine at a garage auction several decades ago and use it in my basement over rungs and concrete. I think the model was originally sold in the 1950's. Parts are still available on eBay. eBay shows a lot of models newer than mine for under $200. The magic word is "vintage."

The Kirby bags are decent at trapping dust, sawdust, and metal chips, but you likely would have to empty it outside. A modern Miele or even vintage Electrolux canister vac that use disposable bags probably have more effective fine particle filtering. The Kirby's are also much heavier than the low cost stick vacuums sold new.

Thank you, kaseki. I remember those old Kirbys! I do want a lighter weight vacuum though., something easy to grab and use under the kitchen table or or the door mats, etc.

@bondia - when my Dyson cordless died - needed new batteries after 4 years, I also searched for a lightweight vac easy to use on wool area rugs & lots of LVP type flooring. I was tired of battery life issue etc. I don’t care about hand held attachment etc. I recently got the Shark Performance Corded Ultra light with DuoClean and Self-cleaning brushroll. I am pretty well satisfied with it. I have a small long haired dog & it does a great job with her hair. Shockingly great. It has easy setting change on top of vac for carpet or hard surface. It’s lightweight. The dust cup not huge but easy to remove & empty. Long cord. Right around $250. I think I got it at Costco. Ordered on line - wasn’t in store. The biggest complaint I read about it is that it isn’t free standing - it must be propped against wall to stand up on its own. I can deal with that!

it does have a detachable hand held but if you don’t want that function don’t use it.

The Shark UV580 Performance UltraLight Corded Stick Vacuum has its motor in the handle and is discontinued but Amazon has refurbished ones for $90.

Hmm - I just looked at Costco & my vacuum is still available - it’s the UV580. It’s a members only item so I couldn’t see price unless I sign in which I didn’t. But seeing in confirms my memory that I bought it online from Costco. Doing that was a gamble for me - I wouldn’t normally buy an appliance without seeing it IRL. But, I’m still satisfied with my purchase & how it feels & functions.

KW PNW Z8, That's a good recommendation and sounds like what I am looking for, except I don't want one with the handheld at the top of the handle - to me that just makes the vacuum awkward and bulky. If I detach the handheld I assume the vacuum does not run without it? I don't mind it not being free standing, I just don't like the awkwardness while using it.

wdccruise, thanks for the heads up about the refurbished ones, I didn't know refurbished are available on Amazon.

@bondia - I guess I’m not tracking what you mean about vacuum not running if handheld detached. The handheld part does run - it has a couple attachments for vacuuming furniture etc, thus the handheld part. As @wdccruise said, the motor is in handle. But, the vacuum isn’t top heavy feeling at all. In fact, it’s easier to handle than my Dyson cordless was, also with motor in top part. I just vacuumed my bedroom carpet, master bath ceramic tile & my plank laminate flooring with area rugs large & small everywhere. A breeze to change to correct floor surface & the cord is long enough to cover a large area before unplugging & moving to a new plug. This vacuum works great for me.

KW PNW Z8, so if the motor is in the handle, does that mean you can completely detach the handheld part, set it aside, and the stick vacuum still runs? I've been thinking the motor was in the handheld and that it had to be attached for the stick part to function.

  • last year

@bondia - the motor / works is in the top of the vacuum. If you detach the ’stick’ you’re left with the handheld which contains the motor. Stick does nothing except contain the floor cleaner parts that cannot run without the motor. This is why I wasn’t tracking what you meant about vacuum not running without handheld. I’ve not found a vacuum like that,

  • last year

KW PNW Z8 - Ok, that's what I thought, the vacuum doesn't run unlss the handheld is attached. I guess I have to see one in person somewhere. But your recommendation is very encouraging, it does sound like it could possibly work for me, and I like the long cord. Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it. BTW, does your name indicates your location? I'm in the PNW also :)

  • last year

@bondia Yes, I am in PNW - SW WA state - close to PDX. I am a type who wants to see & feel an appliance in person too before committing to it. But, after my Dyson died, I was left with a larger Shark corded vacuum that was stored in my upstairs carpeted bonus room. I felt that its strong suction & beater bars were too much for my very nice wool area rugs in downstairs area & it is just too heavy to be lugging up & down the stairs. That’s why I had my Dyson. This corded Shark stick vac works great for me. I also have a small Black & Decker vac that lives in my pantry - a cordless rechargeable - that I use for kitchen clean up. We eat most meals at our counter height bar. When I run the small B & D with its LED light under the counter stools it looks like we must just dump our chip crumbs all over the floor! Shocking!

  • last year

KW PNW Z8 We lived in Vancouver Washington for 10 years, just 15 minutes from PDX, we are in eastern Washington now. The best thing for crumbs in the kitchen is a dog but we don’t have one of those anymore. Sounds like you have the vacuum system that works for you, I hope I figure that out for myself eventually. You have been very helpful.

  • last year

I have the above-mentioned Bissell Featherweight. Bagless, it does fine on our wood and tile floors for a quick pickup, and just "okay" on my area rugs that have a very low nap; it will only get the loose surface dirt. If you want a beater bar and/or brush, this will not meet your needs.

Have you ever actually used a stick vac with the handheld motor attached or are you just assuming it would be bulky? i have 2 corded Shark Uplights(discontinued) that I love. They maneuver easily and do not feel bulky at all. They go from wood floor to carpet. They have the self cleaning brushroll so your not getting hair wrap. And the Uplight actually stands on it’s own. I love a stick vac with the handheld attachment. I use it to clean my baseboards.

  • last year

D K - & @bondia - I am in Vancouver - just a bit outside city limits. We moved here from Seattle area at retirement - wanted to get out of too busy King County. We did consider a couple of areas of Eastern WA where you are now ’D K, but decided too cold & too hot 😊 Generally the climate here seems just right in terms of amount of heat /cold / rain / snow - you know how different all those weather things are in the various areas of our lovely state!

About those crumbs - I’ve had dogs that were pretty good crumb catchers but my little friend we have now doesn’t seem to be too interested & she is very close to the floor. As far as vacuums, my house was built with a built in vac & we told builder to block it off - not a feature I was at all interested in - this based on seeing first hand how those systems work in a friend’s house.

@vinmarks - I agree with you about using the handheld part of the stick vac to clean baseboards. I do that too. I can use my large upright Shark for that function too but as I noted, it’s too heavy to lug up & down stairs. And, it’s too bulky to be going around the room cleaning baseboards. My small stick Shark is perfect for that - I can easily clean window sills & blinds too with the handheld & attachment.

@bondia - curious about what you decide. If you buy the one I have from Costco, you at least know how generous Costco is about accepting returns if it just doesn’t work for you.

  • last year

Cavimum, thank you, that is helpful.

vinmarks, I’ve never used one, I’m just assuming! Guess I’d better actually try one.

KW, PNW Z8, I’m sorry, just realized I’ve been confusing. I accidentally have two accounts and never figured out how to merge them, one on my phone and one on my computer. I’m D K and bondia. I do prefer western Washington’s temperatures but can’t take the gray skies so though I love the Vancouver area, I’m happier in eastern Washington. I’ll post what I decide once I figure it out. I agree about Costco’s return policy.

The Shark HZ2002 performed well enough in CR's tests to earn a Recommended rating. It only earned a mediocre (3/5) rating in carpet cleaning.

    bondia thanked wdccruise

Thanks for that, wdccruise. My CR subscription had expired, I was wondering how they rated it. I am OK with a 3/5 on carpet, I'll only be using it on doormats and area rugs and will occasionally have to pull out my big vacuum to do a thorough job on those. My top priority is the hard floors.
