A paver walkway from your gate to your new turf area with a T to your door would really improve the look and function of your yard. You could also try out the idea of including a landing pad for the trash cans. Laying out the possibilities with hoses or ropes is a good way to visualize different layouts. We've added several paver walkways to our house and love them!

I'd extend the shrubs along the fence to the left to right in front of the trash bins to hide them. One shrub might do the trick.

A walkway to the gate and to the door as mojavemaria says, would help. It could be concrete or pavers that match the edging along your lawn. Some shrubs in the bed along the house wall would soften its look, and a shrub beside the nearest trash can would help to hide it. Curved edges would go best with the look of your space, and a small tree or palm in the center foreground would help stop the eye in front of your utility area. Put a drought-tolerant groundcover wherever you don't have either walkway or planting beds. Looks like you might be in southern CA? If so, there are lots of succulent groundcovers that are easy to maintain, and a bougainvillea planted next to the gate could ramble along your fence.

A simple fence at the end to match your current fencing would make a difference and maintain access. Or you could get fancy and box the whole area in front with a simple flat topped fence with gates in the front. access - over head and and the front, would be maintained while the bulk is hidden behind a fence. Then shrubbery could be grown to incorporate the area into your garden.
