Guidance to create a modern open concept kitchen living space

How can I best update this kitchen to create a more open concept while modernizing the design? I'm considering adjustments that would maximize the space, improve functionality, and enhance the overall aesthetic. Any suggestions on wall removal, cabinetry updates, or other design changes that could transform the kitchen and create better flow into the living area?

Get rid of the pantry closet and use pantry cabinets to fill the space.

Take upper cabinets to the ceiling and keep that same height over the vaulted area.

Replace all the flooring with one continuous flooring. I would go with engineered wood floors.

Better/more recessed lights. There are newer styles for sloped ceilings.

Are you open to major work like removing that wall between the kitchen and the living room? An L-shaped kitchen with a 4 foot foot by 8’ island could be amazing. That will be a lot of work.

You’re asking for ideas, not blueprints. we can absolutely help with those, but knowing how much you are willing to change will help up to help you. Your kitchen space is grand central for doorways. I don’t know why builders always do that, but I’d love to see your deck access moved or at least reduced to a single door. Also, we are all going to want to see beams in that space supporting your structure and that wall dividing the kitchen and living spaces removed. If that’s not within the realm of possibility for you, let us know.

Basics, like a single flooring in the space, you will want to consider regardless of the structural changes. Why that sink window wasn’t centered under the ceiling peak I cannot begin to guess. It doesn’t have to be moved, it’s just a head scratcher.

The vision of opening up the space by removing the wall between the kitchen and living room and possibly reconfiguring the doorways and the deck access is something I hadn’t considered, but it sounds intriguing. I’ll definitely need to evaluate how far I’m willing to go with the changes, but your insights give me a lot to think about.

I agree the kitchen space seems to be a hub for all the doorways, and reducing that complexity could make a huge difference. As for structural support like beams and considerations for single flooring, these are all helpful things to keep in mind. And yes, that off-centered window is a bit of a head-scratcher, isn’t it? I’ll consider whether or not to tackle that part of the design too.

One more question - I was assuming these were stairs to the basement. Is this a pantry? If so you will love not having that there! Whatever level of reno you choose, I recommend you pull this out. Good luck!
