Kitchen cabinet color help

last year

Hi All,

We are leaning towards espresso (between dark brown and black) color to paint our existing kitchen cabinets. Attached a picture for reference, right now the finish is cherry with a red tone to it not as noticable in the attachment. We like more matte paint finish vs high gloss finish. In your experience,

  • any recommendations on paint color brand/specific color shade that has worked for you given there are so many variations within espresso.
  • how does matte paint finish hold with oil stains and on high use cabinets

Thank you,

Monica

do the cabinets need it due to wear and tear ? Personally I think I'd leave the dark cherry...even if it leans red ..since its a factory finish. too much work and expense for the end result. I like your kitchen...probably would get a backsplash in the very lighter / near white or white family. I would pick semi gloss in answer to your question . Yes I''ve worked w black paints...we ordered a couple windows w black frames then I chose a couple areas of black trim., then we ordered a thermatru newer door for a lower level situation in smooth black fiberglass [great door] so did some black paint around that. Bring the cards home from paint store. Blacks are a huge family with lots of undertones from maroon to blue to red to green....then you can go to gunmetal ..just up from black. I think I ended up w some sherwin williams trim paint ...it wasnt a whole huge project so got a sale price ....their paint is good for what I needed. I dont know...if you are going to do this I'd use b Moore if you are doing this yourself but I wouldnt change your cabinets really.

I would definitely leave what you have. They look to be in great shape, and will hold up a whole lot longer than painted ones will. What I see about your kitchen, is lack of color. Everything is browns, and a bit of creams. No color at all. Painting the cabinets wouldnt change that at all.

Have you ever painted kitchen cabinets before? Doing it properly is effortful, messy, time consuming, and the juice is not worth the squeeze to go from dark cherry to espresso. It’s not like you will escape the red - you still have the floors.

I get that you don’t like your cabinets, but consider dealing with those floors first. I know they are everywhere, that means the impact of refinishing them will be global. It’ll be like a new home. You can use espresso stain on the floors.

If you’re going to paint the cabinets anyway, you have choices beyond matte and high gloss. You should be using a high quality urethane enamel, like Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. It comes in a satin finish.

    Good luck.

with the beautiful bay window and greenery on view have you thought of rattan for the space. I''d go the route of accesories rather than the big paint project. That is, if you want to do a project that is discretionary, at all.
