Do you have to refrigerate them? Or is it cold enough outdoors where you live? Or…?

I put them in a shed. It's cold but stays above freezing.

Three weeks later ...

They've been in the dark with temps around 50 - 60 f.

Do you bring all of them indoors together? The scent must be SO strong!

No. I bring them in one at a time. By keeping most of them cool out in the shed I can have at least one in bloom indoors for weeks.

Nice! Maybe one of these days I'll remember to order some hyacinth bulbs for forcing. :p

I bought them at a local garden centre. You might still find some of you're quick. They sell them here in the Christmas section if you miss the autumn bulbs. They're 'prepared' ie you don't need to do anything clever with chilling etc

You have the perfect system. Look at those roots! I tried one year to copy you by doing the same in my garage, but the Hyacinths bloomed squatty and low to the bulb. It's unheated, but maybe the garage got too warm? I wasn't sure what would cause that.

Now that I have an outdoor shed, I should try it again? They bring such a lovely fragrance into the home while it's still cold and snowy outside, and I would like to have that again.

Just brought the first couple into a cold porch. That's their transition before they go into the heated house. Once in there they go over fast.

Oops! I forgot some in the shed.

They'll green up fine. Meanwhile these are finished and ready to go into the garden.

The last three just going over. As you can see there are plenty of flowers outside now, including previous year's hyacinths, so the indoor ones have bridged the winter gap.

That's it until next autumn.

Forcing Hyacinth again bulbs this year?

I'm growing some in my cool garage, water does not freeze, they were not prepared. Covered up under a box, growing roots. Some sprout tips are growing faster than others, not sure why. Still trying to find the best way.

When is the best time to uncover to daylight? Let them grow in the cool while greening up. Bring into heat after the flower cluster bud is large?

I don't have any experience growing unprepared hyacinths. I bring mine into my cool light when the jar is full of roots and the (green) flower bud is visible in the nose of the growth. I bring into warmth in succession so I have one in flower at a time.
