Do I need Tamora?

I have David Austen's Chaucer which is light pink and myrrh scented. I was thinking about getting Tamora in the spring if it's available. But do I need another myrrh scented DA? (Also, in my hot climate, the apricot will fade quickly.)

It will fade quickly and it WILL rust like an old iron skillet. All of those descended from Conrad Ferdinand Meyer are highly susceptible to rust, but it was one of the best of the early Austin roses for So Cal. It flowers a lot, smells heavily (good if you like myrrh, bad if not) and it maintained a fairly "floribunda" habit instead of the traditional "Dr. Huey over the septic tank" rampant growth too many of them are infamous for. The bed of it at The Huntington has been magnificent for decades. I'm told they still grow there.

Kim's right. Tamora rusted like an old iron skillet here -- which is why it didn't stay long.

Thanks, Sheila. And yes, everyone needs Tamora, which I've grown for about 16 years. I got her from Pickering Nursery and she's grafted on multifora. She is a continuous bloomer in my semi arid desert which has very hot, dry summers. Like all my roses, she's irrigated via a drip system. She stays small about three feet tall and 2.5 feet wide, like she's supposed to. She never throws out strange long canes or has gotten enormous like lots of my Austins. Diane

This year she began blooming in May and is still in bloom in October.

I try to never ever grow roses which are famous for getting rust. The only one left in my garden is Peace. The one we have is a cutting of one we think was planted in our garden by my DH's grandfather, right after it was introduced here after WWII. So, I put up with its black spot and rust proclivities, and prune it a lot and even spray it occasionally with Bayer Advanced Disease control, which works. I go to that trouble ONLY because it is a "family heirloom". The facts that the blooms are spectacular and mine is a climber, both help.

Thanks everyone! I'm with rosecanadian. Those pictures are amazing.

Rust is not usually a problem for me. That doesn't mean Tamora won't be the first to get it here, though. But I'm willing to give it a try. I hope mine looks half as good as Diane's and KJ's. I'm also curious to see if I detect a difference between the myrrh of Chaucer and Tamora.

    Update.

I won't have to wait until Spring. I found one on eBay. I've never bought roses on eBay before.

Lily...Good to hear that it does well in a container since that's how I'll be growing mine.

Diane...love the pictures, especially the first one that shows the whole range of color as it fades.
