Is that an image of what you currently have in the room now? If not, can you show a current view of the room so we can recommend placement and size?

We are moving into a new house. This is what the current homeowners have, but we want a sectional.

I wanted a sectional also when I was purchasing new funiture a couple years ago. My room is 16.5' x 19.5'. However, after reading many posts on Houzz, I decided to purchase a nice long sofa + two comfy chairs (that are a bit wider than a typical accent chair).

I also purchased a LARGE matching ottoman for the sofa - that allows me to use the sofa like a sectional/chaise when needed (for movie night) - but also use it as a coffee table (I have a walnut waterfall wood table that rolls over part of the ottoman - so, it can actually be used like a coffee table - I found laying a large tray on top to not be very stable - it has hidden coaster/wheels making it easy to slide over to one side or completely off of the ottoman).

I have been able to rearrange the furniture in the room since I went with a sofa + two chairs - I wouldn't have been able to do that with a sectional. I also plan on moving this furniture down to the basement once it's finished (again, a sectional wouldn't have allowed this flexibility).

I will give my thoughts on sectionals . They are the most expensive way to buy seating that is only comfy for the 2 people that get an armrest , armrests=comfort. All the rest are sitting just like the dreaded center seat on a sofa lined up like kids at a birthday party . Also totally site specific so rarely fit in the next home . Get a sofa and 2 chairs 4 people comfy and 5 in a pinch and just so much better for furnmniture arrangement . Please no mattter what no chaise ever .Realto pics are never a good way to show a space for real help. Wahere do you plan the TV please not above the FP Then choose pieces to allow TV watching . This one of the reasons I never put a FP in space where I want TV .

I love sectionals, but in your room this will be difficult.

It looks like you have 4 walls that all have openings.

You need 3' wide walking spaces in front of the doorways - (Minimum of 3')

I just threw in a 9' x 9' x 3' sectional but you can do this in excel with actual sizes.

Although this fits it will be a tight fit with a lot of furniture for the space. Visually it might be overwhelmingly large.

I generally take furniture I own and place it where the sofa would start and end and drape blankets over the form so I have a real good visual of the size of the sofa before purchasing.

My living room is 18 x 20 with lots of openings and a 3 seat by 2 seat with a corner works well, but I can't fit any additional chairs and have it not feel cramped. (Furniture store tried to get me to buy chairs as well, but I am glad I stuck with just the sectional.)

Personally,

I would probably look at traditional sofa and chairs for your space vs a sectional.

If you truly want a sectional the smallest, sleekest type without large arms or overstuffed anything would be my choice.

Furniture always looks much smaller in a showroom than in your living room.

You could try a sectional, but you might need to do a small one in order to work in this room. They have apartment sized sectionals and if you're open to other ideas you could do a sofa and two chairs easily as well.
