Tape out a 9 x 12 to see if it allows the 2 sofas & 1 chair to have front feet sitting on it & to extend almost to hearth. I’m not fond of the gray & yellow color or the rug design. Colors don’t seem to relate to anything in room. Design is too formal / defined to blend well with the hide rug. I’d look for a less defined or softer pattern & more texture in pattern. I’d also look for one with the same or close white color that’s in the hide rug & seating furniture.

No, the rug shouldn't cover the slate. Start it where you have it. I would look at geometric patterns. I think a floral would fight the pattern on the chair.

I wondered if that was a hearth since it appeared different color than floor. I agree with ^^ that rug shouldn’t cover slate. Maybe a 8x 10 is right size - you really need to tape it out to see how it would fit. Looks like there’s lots of room behind sofa & console table to allow all the furniture to be moved farther away from FP. That might make a standard sized rug to fit better & allow a small strip of space between edge of rug & hearth slate. Colors - as I noted, I’d match background color to seating furniture white shade. The other colors in your room look like teal tone blues & chocolate. Design - I also agree with ^^ to skip florals. Geometric designs on a much smaller scale than the yellow / grey rug you have would work & the smaller pattern adds a feel of texture too. The scale of designs in your chair, the hide rug & toss pillows are all equal weight. The current rug is much weightier. Look for geometric design that’s @ half size of current rug. That’s the ”scale” - size of design = to size of piece. There are sooo many choices it’s impossible to suggest specfic rugs - it’s like choosing art. I find that uploading my photo to a visualizer tool helps ’see’ how things look. Many rug sites have visualizers.

Ivory, cream and grays in a rug would go with your decor. I agree it needs to be larger, move the sofa back a foot --and a few inches of slate covered seems okay to me as long as cinders don't land on it.

Walmart:

Switch the b/w "hide" look chair with the leather chair. The b/w hide chair does not jibe with the ivory/cream sofas and warm wood table. Use the ivory leather chair in the conversational seating.

Once the hide chair is in the corner...arrange the hide rug so it does not jut out into the room so much.

P.S. ditch the big clock for a nice painting.

@George Slavin I like most of the rugs @User shows you. If you swap the chairs as @tracefloyd suggested, any of the rugs will work & the effect of the patterns won’t be too busy with that patterned chair sitting in the corner away from the new rug. That chair will work with your hide rug but play around with the angle of that hide rug in corner - maybe lay it on diagonal instead of ’pointing’ towards the center of the room as it is now.

The solid light blue 2nd from top by ArchictecturalDetails. Your blue pillows really pop and the blue brings in so much life and the plain pattern is soothing. I just want to see it bigger, get it big enough for the sofas to sit on.

Im having a time with the colors for these rugs. Some of the pics on rugs direct are misleading -example see attached pic. They say teal/ivory.Teal is bright teal in one picture- not like what we are seeing -not like the picture

The rug site visualizers are good but colors on computer monitors are not always accurate. Once you narrow it down, order some rug samples in small sizes (if returnable for a refund) to check the colors in your room before you order the full size rug.

Here are a few more rug options (all from rugsdirect.com). I switched the chairs as suggested above (pardon the clumsy drawing!) so the eye isn't distracted by the hide pattern when judging the rug. These are generally 9x12's and do overlap the slate.

I like #4 the best. The border is great with the lines of the sofas. It has no center medallion, which is good...a coffee table would just cover it up. It is not too dark. I has a nice shade of blue. It has orange in it. Do you have challenges perceiving color? Because it looks like it has orange on my laptop. The shade is nice and ties in the wood tones.

Yes, the orange and blue is a nice combo. It looks like your pillows pick up colors in the rug but the ivory pillows seem too yellow with the cream sofas. Consider getting rust-orange pillow covers for them.
