What is the hard sandy looking surface called?

    Hi, that is stabilized decomposed granite aka DG. You want to add stabilizer if you plan to use it as a walking surface. We omit the stabilizer (common binders are cement, tree resin and psyllium husk) and use it more as a mulch for areas designated for planting. If you add enough stabilizer, it should be hard enough to withstand rain, snow and dogs. It is not completely maintenance free. Some runnelling can, however, occur over time. It is not difficult to retill and compact the surface as needed. If you are in an area of poor drainage, crushed gravel might be a better option.
