Congratulations on your new home! For your 15x15 family room, a sectional can definitely work, especially if you choose a design that complements the space. Here are some tips to consider when setting it up:

    1. Choose the right sectional: Look for a sectional that fits well in the room without overwhelming it. A compact or L-shaped sectional can maximize seating while maintaining an open feel. Consider styles that allow for flow around the room.
    2. Furniture arrangement: Position the sectional to create a cozy conversation area. If possible, angle it slightly rather than placing it directly against the wall. This can make the room feel more inviting and spacious.
    3. Add a coffee table: A coffee table in the center can anchor the seating area. Make sure it’s proportional to the sectional and leaves enough space for movement—about 18 inches from the sectional is ideal.
    4. Incorporate additional seating: If you have room, consider adding a couple of accent chairs or poufs to enhance the seating capacity without crowding the space.
    5. Define the space: Use area rugs to define the seating area and add warmth. A rug that’s large enough to fit under the front legs of the sectional will help tie the room together.
    6. Decorate thoughtfully: Use wall art, cushions, and throws to bring personality into the space. These can also add comfort and style, making the family room a welcoming spot for gatherings.

By carefully selecting and arranging your furniture, your family room can become a functional and stylish space for relaxation and socializing!

First, congrats to you! How exciting!!

Second, a sectional of some type is certainly possible, but it depends on how you want to room to work for you. You can see with the past owners' sectional, the end that came out into the space was an open chaise, so the back of the sectional didn't really cut off the open feeling.

I think the first question is to determine how you want to have the TV placed. I don't love the way it is in the sale photos, and think it might look much better on the long wall if you are ok with placing your sofa or sectional in front of the window. You can pull it forward a bit (maybe even a simple sofa table behind it) and choose a sofa that isn't too tall so it doesn't block as much. With the right drapes framing out the whole window it could look quite nice.

If you want the TV in the corner or by the fireplace wall, you are looking more at an arrangement like the previous owners, where a sectional may give you more options for comfortable viewing.
