Is it cheap builder grade trim in an average house or a custom house where someone paid up for good quality beefy wood trim?

Your house, your decision.

Context is key as there are other factors that will influence decisions. Type of trim, stairs railing, etc.. Ceiling heights, open concept, natural a& artificial lighting, all go into the decision. As well as the condition and style of the trim.

You will get better answers, if you post some pictures of the trim, and the rooms.

Just a personal preference, but I ❤️ a dark cherry or mahogany violet undertone for all woods, including trim!

This allows you a GORGEOUS light paint contrast, creating a frame for your furnishings and art!

High contrast in the ”frame” of a decor structure — meaning, not the main focus — makes spaces look very clean. Here, dark wood in any tone against light walls allows you to play with any range of colors/shape/pattern/lighting. In trim, violet mahogany or ash tones give you a huge range of freedom.

High contrast (complimentary, color wheel opposites) as the main color scheme — say, terracotta walls (red/orange tone) and sage or mint toned fabric (green) — can get overwhelming. High contrast is a powerful tool meant for structural elements, and really works. The 90s gave us some really great revivals in technique, and this one should stay!

And came the aughts, where we painted everything cream, pink, and ecru, in the 80s revival.

Well, today its everything white. Pretty sick of seeing that everywhere too.

We need pics I live ina MCM ranch the trim was as simple as possible so not worth highlighting at all so I painted it the same color as the walls only a bit different sheen no need to bring it to attention. I think so much depends on your style too. Do a bit more info posted here in comments along with pics please DO NOT start another post .White trim is timelss too and every pic in your idea books is white trim that says something to me about what to do

Wood trim around windows is trending again so you could keep it for some areas.

I don't like dark contrasting ceiling trim. I would paint out just the crown molding to the same white as the ceiling...makes the ceiling seem taller.

Would advise not to replace but paint instead.
