I'm sure he can't do it. Vinyl on stairs always ends up looking bad anyway. Stairs should always be solid wood treads.

A neighbor had this done (copying my house with solid oak treads). The vinyl started peeling at the miters before he got it on the market. Those stairs were built for carpet. Imagine someone does a beautiful job installing the lvt- how will you finish the nosings? The sides? What about where the nosing ends at the open side of each step?

Get a guy who can do the job and BTW it can be done and look nice too > I think to match stairs to floor is a must and no way I wanted a wood stair that did not match my LVP in my walkout . We did not have the open sides but if that had been an issue I would have learned the skill to deal with it .

That would be the right choice if easy is what you want and it would still look awesome

Hire the right contractor who has the proper equipment. Doing these mitres is likely going to require a precise saw. A standard contractor will likely not make the investment in tools and skill.
