I would love some ideas on what to put in this space above the cabinets!

It would be helpful if you posted photos of the rest of the room.

If it were me, I’d hang a collection of old platters and plates and then add a few larger accessories so it isn’t a drop zone

What will this space be used for? A coffee bar?

^Good question from Linda. If you hang art above it, it needs to be low enough to ”connect” to the cabinets.

It looks like a catch-all right now. Create a purpose. You have a beverage fridge, So add shelves for glasses, bar accessories, maybe add a coffee station as well. Find a different landing point for the mail, keys, etc.
Alternatively, you designate this as a drop zone with a mirror, shelves and cubbies for mail and keys.
In both cases not for legos, cars, etc.

I hate word art and clocks for decor but a nice piece of art is really all you need one piece that you love or if this is a bar area then make it one . Glasses a tray with an ice bucket and maybe a cocktail shaker Right now it has no purpose so decide that first

For better function what is it used for?

If making it into a coffee station/bar, some elements to consider adding are a wall treatment like tile, open shelving, sconces or a lamp, coffee maker(s), electric water kettle, pour-over equipment, wine rack, art, coffee mugs, and wine glasses:

This could be a nice gallery wall, and it looks like it’s a natural drop zone in which case baskets, cubbies, whatever you need to organize what tends to be dropped here. In my experience drop zones are hard to change… best to go with the flow especially, if it’s a family drop zone. You’ll end up spending too much energy trying to get people to change! Best to corral them.

Shelves might be handy, but don’t over accessorize.

It’s a drop zone, out the door is our mudroom. Drop zone that I want to make look better! We have a liquor in the cabinets.

I would keep it simple..add a large piece of art..a nice leather organizer and add a pretty pottery vase with some greens or branches.
You could add a set of these battery operated sconces to flank wall art.

I have a couple of large tea towels I had stretched/stapled on a frame to hang up. I love the images, from a museum exhibit on French advertising posters. but there are so many great ones out there. There must be something that speaks to you.
