No mosaics! Unless you’re going for a very dated look. They went out at least 10 years ago.

Your kitchen is blindingly white…hospital white. A real wood floor would’ve added much needed warmth to the room.

Get a subway tile, perhaps a crackle tile, in an actual color. A light green, perhaps?

Thank you for the input. That is a rental property in the same neighborhood, that we have. Just using the layout as an example. Our kitchen is similiar in layout. May i ask, how you came to the choice of light green?

  • last year

Green is an earthy (think trees and bushes), warm color. A light green, will give you color without being in-your-face saturated.

Here’s my stained wood kitchen, with Celadon green crackle tiles. I think it would be a good choice for your very white kitchen.

No to the mosaic. Is that stone pic in your first post your actual countertop? If so, you need a QUIET backsplash, that stone is a star player, you don't want anything to compete with it. Simple subway in a neutral color (soft white found in the stone would be a good choice).

  • last year

Yes, that is the actual countertop. Let me ask this. A simple subway tile in a neutral color (soft white found in the stone would be a good choice). Will this get lost in the design with shaker white cabinets?

You need the backsplash to be a background element - not another "star" - your slab is vey busy + has a lot of color - you don't want a backsplash that competes for attention.

It seems like most kitchens with Ijen (this is what I've commonly heard it named - Ijen - not jen) Blue quartzite countertops continue the slab up the wall for the backsplash:

    Much lighter slab than yours:

I saw a couple that used a white subway that had a bit of variation instead of being pure white:

I did see a couple kitchens with a very light marble - one was Carrara and one was Calacatta. Both had tiles that did not have a lot of dramatic veining in the tiles for the backsplash.

If you aren't going to run the slab up the wall - I'd wait until everything has been installed before selecting a backsplash tile.

Thank you for the pictures. I would have never considered using the stone as a backsplash. i appreciate you tataking the time.

"Will this get lost in the design with shaker white cabinets?"

That's the point -- you want a supporting player for that gorgeous stone, not a co-star who is going to duke it out with the diva. Quiet and simple really is better here.

It's a matter of personal taste, but I don't like slabs used as a backsplash -- too much of a good thing is still too much, it's often overkill.

Do a very simple white backsplash…if you have not already purchased the blue countertop and this is for a rental property I would reconsider..it is a very personal choice…and a neutral color pallet would suit more people…the blue and white is a very cool/cold combination.

Heck to the NO for any of the stripy busy stuff. An interesting shape in a varying glazed blue gray, sure. Daltile Mesmerist, in Whimsy. Also has other shapes like a standard subway, and an arabesque.

And it has a gray, with blue tones, if you don't want to dive into blue.

If you already bought the countertop, then go with a simple backsplash. The one you have picked out is way too busy, for that busy countertop. Keep it simple.

Yes, the slabs are purchased. This is for our primary residence. Thank you for your opinions, and photos.

The calacatta umber is nice it adds warmth…

I'm glad that I found that photo with the Calacatta Umber! I hadn't really thought of marble when I first read your post - but then I remembered that I saved it awhile ago when I was looking at ideas for my powder room (I'm having a floating vanity made out of stone - and am thinking about using a more unusual dramatic slab for fabrication of the vanity instead of doing something more expected).

I think it works well with the colors in the slab.

Would love to see some mixed finish tile or something a bit geometric such as WOW tile.

Here is showing a metal inlay tile:

That looks pretty goodEven though I'm not sure about the ceiling I would have had it a light gray but I do like walls and ceiling sometimes the same color does it feel dark? And is there a light above your sink I like that you chose some wood that helps warm it up a bit
