I don’t know if this is a special method but I just Google ’flange binding’ and there are several hits. I believe they are basically the same instructions.

It does make a nice finish.

There are several tutorials out there. It's mostly a matter of how wide you like your binding - the accent color is cut 1/4" wider than the other color. To me, the trickiest part is after you sew the binding to the quilt, making the final connecting seam for the two ends. Getting the diagonal to match up is the trickiest part. I love the pop the accent color gives.

Iron it once you have it attached to the back, then fold it over and I pin the corners so you get a nice diagonal, then stitch in the ditch of the accent color.

Be sure to check which color is your accent before sewing by folding it over to the front!! I have to admit, once time I messed up and put the accent color upside down and it was buried so I had to tear out one side.

Flange Binding tutorial

I did a flange on my Home quilt. Had no idea what i was doing, but it came out fine. I cut it at each corner rather than doing a mitered corner like the binding, so no need to join the ends.

I took a class on piping from Susan Cleveland in the spring (https://piecesbewithyou.com). She uses 1/8” cording to make the piping. Again, you stitch it on each side and cut. With a contrasting fabric, this little sliver can make an impact. Here I did it between my blocks and border.

Thanks loisflan. I may have shown my Home quilt here previously, but are always willing to show it off. This was the first quilt I ever completed. It’s wool on a linen background and was beautifully quilted by a talented longarmer in Utah whom I found on Facebook. With some nudging, I entered it in several national shows and was thrilled to ribbon in each one. This was at the AQS show in Daytona Beach in February where I took 1st in my category. Even more exciting, I received Viewers Choice at that show.

The quilt I’m currently working on is also wool on linen.

I’m playing with the border and hope to finish it by mid-January.

Wow! Gorgeous, both of them! With what kind of threads do you do all of the beautiful hand embroidery?

I have never done anything with wool applique and if I even thought about bringing any more fabric on the sailboat, my husband would toss me overboard! Maybe I will try it when we finish our ocean adventures and become land lubbers again. The flange binding is definitely something I can try now though.
