Using 1/2” thick quartz for shower niche

Has anyone used a quartz slab that is 1/2” thick on the bottom part of their shower niche?

I know 3/4”-1” is standard, but that adds such bulk to the bottom of the niche and doesn’t look as good to me. My contractor has said it’s “very hard to do”, but what I hear is, it can be done with extreme care.

The “niche” is actually less of a niche and more of a shelf since it spans the entirety of the shower wall (84”)

I love your design and tile! We did maybe 3cm quartz counter and used it on the shower curb, not sure why you couldn’t do that for the shelf other than a long thin piece might be more breakable prior to install. (Not a pro.)

Thank you! We wanted to make it as seamless as possible and I looked at it with the 3/4” slab up there and it just looks bulky/clunky compared to the rest of the shower. It’s definitely riskier to try for a long thin piece, but I was just wondering if it had been done before.

Can you use the tile and install with epoxy grout?

We used porcelain tile so we’re trying to avoid the unfinished edge showing. Our contractor recommended using a stone slab but he wants to install it much thicker than I’d like

You could have 2cm (3/4") estone milled to 1/2", however, that may release internal stress and cause the piece to bow. Use a solid surface like Corian please. It's already 1/2", no stress to release, and outperforms estone in this application.
