Protection from:

Cold? What temperatures apply, how deep is the frost line?

Damage/Tripping hazard? Maybe a picket fence.

Contamination from passing buffalo with bladder issues?

Copper theft?

Corrosion?

Do you have an elevation diagram of the well?

From cold i guess? we are in east coast carolina. Protection from contamination would also be great. When we got the home, there were plastic and clothing pieces sourround the area is spordic spots. We are not sure why and cleaned it out. it also had no well house so we need to protect it some how.

Your town may have a building inspector who can provide guidance on what is required. Although I live in NH, I think I once experienced sub freezing temperatures in Raleigh. If so, the ground can freeze, but I don't know much about the coast. A shed with an electric heater set at 35F, for example, might be sufficient.
