Why bother at all with a new TV until the renos are done . Is this the only place for a TV? If so IMO it belongs on the wall where the cabinet is across from the windows not above the mantel no matter what. A cabinet 25% wider than the TV a low enough to have the center of the screen at eye level when you are seated . If you are concerend with light form the window add a solar shade .

I mentioned that the tv will 100% be going on that wall above the mantel. We've had our tv above a cabinet on the non-mantel wall for 7+ years, and we're wanting a change to our layout.

The smaller mock-up looks better.

You may lose your savings in what you end up paying to a chiropractor for having to look up that high all the time!

If you place the TV on the RH wall, you can install a much larger TV screen.

@BeverlyFLADeziner I get what you're saying but we're 100% sure the tv is going on the mantel wall (even if that means a much smaller tv).

To answer your question, I think 55” looks better.

as is, i like the 55in but I think with a lower mantle etc, I think 65in will look better.

In this case, 55”…a bit less overpowering.

Maybe wait until this yet-to-be-built lower mantel is there and then redo the mock-up.

However, if the fireplace and rest of the wall is not changing, 55".

We have a 55" over our fireplace & mantel. We have 9' ceilings. Unfortunately they put the outlet a little too low so we couldn't mount our TV any higher than it is in the picture, so we were stuck with the skinny frame. I would have preferred a beefier frame and the picture placed a little higher than it is to give some clearance to the mantel but oh well.

Bottom line you are paying for a frame TV. Don't get it bigger than you would a piece of art. I know a few people who made that mistake and no matter what their TV looks like a TV.

Side note: this is not our main TV for movies etc. so the size was less important than the aesthetic. If size were more important I would probably just buy a regular TV.

For any valuable suggestions, we need to know what your new fireplace will look like and dimensions.

With your current furniture layout and size of you fireplace, the best location for the TV would be on the wall across from the sofa, above the sideboard.

Buy the 65". Get a lower rectangle fireplace to go under it. Remove the pop out wall. Pick the fireplace to go with your preferred sized TV. Only put functional furniture stuff in the room.

Go black; go big.

Does the tape in the pictures include the frame you want? If yes, I'd go with the larger. Most people say they should have gone bigger, not it's too big. Is this your main TV viewing room?

I wouldn't want it over the fireplace, unless it was a rarely used TV.

Question - In your posted photos, you have a chair in front of the fireplace with a green vertical line. Is that the height of the planned new fireplace and mantel?

There are two questions here that people are answering. One is how big of a TV you should get. Full stop. The other is what size looks better if you want it to look like art.

If you go with a bigger size and you don't change the wall the fireplace is on, then the 65 will look too big to be art. But if the bigger TV is more important to you and it doesn't bother you that it won't really look proportional to be art and you still want to pay the premium for it, that's up to you.

If you reconstruct the entire wall then you could virtually get any size as long as you get a proportionally large fireplace.

Here is our 85" TV over our 100" fireplace. It's not a frame because we didn't care if it looked like art. But it could be a frame and look just fine with the proportions we have.

My cousins bought a 65" frame TV and put it over their fireplace with similar proportions to yours (the fireplace comes out from the wall). It's obviously a TV, even when displaying art, because the proportions are not right.

Also, with the frame TV you need to have an outlet and a tech tube with a place to put the guts. Make sure the tech tube is less than 15' long, otherwise you will need to purchase a longer cable. This happened to us - our cable was about 2' too short and we had to buy another one for $200.

Personally, I’d wait to purchase tv until updates are being done and consider a bit smaller/enclosed would be a better option, but it depends if you are ok with tv being so prominent in the room.

I have a large frame TV and my intent was never to fool anyone to think it was real art. No one thinks it is! My intent was to have something pretty/colorful being displayed instead of a 75" "black hole".

@chispa your TV is appropriately sized for the space. And you still put a nice a frame around it, so whether or not it "fools" anyone (which wasn't my point anyway) the intent of it to look like art is still there.

My point to the OP is that if you want it to look like art you should size it like art. If all you want is something to not be a black hole over your mantel there are art apps or screen savers you can use that can accomplish that for less money and less hassle (see my comment regarding the tech tube & a spot for the "guts", which the OP doesn't currently have). The nice frames from Deco frames are also really expensive (and honestly I think the deco frame is kind of a necessity for the aesthetic - samsung's bezels are not great, and still not inexpensive). So if you don't care whether it actually looks like art and you don't plan on buying a frame for it then I wouldn't spend the money on a frame TV. Just get a regular 65" and use an art app.

A 65" tv is too large for that room. I'd leave it at that - decision made, 55" it is.

Once mantel is lowered, I don't think the *extra* space above a 55" tv is bothersome at all. If that extra space above tv up to the crown molding bothers you, perhaps there is room to install a second shelf above the tv.

A tv is a tv is a tv. Trying to camouflauge it to resemble art is doing an injustice to art.

I would do 55# and leave the fireplace alone. Just my opinion.

I am not an interior designer, nor art critic, nor tv size specialist, I do know what I like to see when I walk into a room. Hate seeing pictures hung 10" below the ceiling, prefer seeing at eye level.

Is your Fireplace functional? We closed up our fire place at the roof when we had our roof redone, the roofer suggested it, It was drafty, we used it once in the 39 years we have lived here. I feared possible future fires, smoking up the house, bird nests in the flue, roof leaks, etc.

We still have the fireplace showing as a feature in the living room and the wall above has no pictures as it is an architectural feature to our cathedral ceiling. Being minimalist is the ideal, keeping a Fireplace as a feature period is ideal. Our TV is opposite our sofa, hence as previously said by a previous commentator, best location. When standing and looking at your room, give yourself an eye test, how does your eye feel when it moves around the walls of the living room.

You've asked for opinions, some you may not like, however, you want to place the TV above the mantel area, and it doesn't mean you can't move it later at another expense, i.e., get the electrician in, have the wall repaired and repainted.

I personally feel the 55" inch is the best over the size of mantel. If you bring the mantel down that only gives you more room on top, not on the sides. I totally understand putting the tv above the fireplace, I am going through the same thing our mantel is too high, but it's the only place for a TV. It's not ideal. My next-door neighbor just had their whole main floor redone, a new kitchen living room, and family room. Their living room is the same size as yours, she hired an interior decorator and this is exactly what they did. TV above the fireplace and built-in shelving on each side. They bought a picture TV so it would look like artwork. It has a frame and you download the picture you want. They did go with a 65' but everything was built for that side TV. I feel you don't really have much room to bring the mantle down unless you were going more contemporary and redoing a whole new frame around the fireplace, then spray paint the brass part black on the firebox, easy cheap, and can bring it up to date. PS From someone who sold tv, appliances, and furniture for 11 years, black Friday and Boxing Day are the best times of year to purchase a new TV. Good Luck and please show us the finished picture. The 55 seems to be the perfect size. It will still look really good once the mantel is moved as well. The 65 is to wide IMO.

For the comments about stating it should go here or there , you question was what size above the mantle , not whats people opinions in where it should go.

Buy the 55" TV now. Right before your remodel, move the 55" TV to another room (bedroom?).

After the remodeling is finished, buy the 65" TV.

The size of the TV should depend on the distance of the viewer from the TV. Here's an article and calculator to help you decide:

Mount the TV to a pull-down mount that will allow you to view the TV at a more comfortable level. Examples:

Forget the Samsung The Frame which has its own mount. Purchase a TV that can conforms to the VESA standard for attachment to the pull-down mount . Since the TV will be viewed from other than directly ahead, select a TV that supports viewing from a wide angle. The 65" Samsung QN65S90D or QN65S90DD did well in CR's tests as did the 55" Samsung QN55S90D and LG OLED55C4AUA.
