repurpose built in shelving center

Bought this home with already built in shelving we would like to repurpose the center and use it for something besides a TV.

The second picture is of our mantle. We are hanging the frame TV over top of it with this new dark green paint. We’re trying to go more natural wood and wanting to possibly change up the fireplace look somehow.

Looking for suggestions! Thank you so much!

The TV will be much to high for viewing above the fireplace. Why do you want to move it? Do you want a TV that is larger than the current built in will fit?

In my opinion, you need to plan this carefully. You might want to increase the spacing between the shelves and add shelves to the middle portion. Do make a detailed plan of the shelves, what you will put on them, etc. Books? DVDS? Decor? Also consider if the shelves and/or the backing will remain white. For example, you might continue the green for the backing.

Right now there is a lot of open shelves. What is the spacing between shelves? Large enough for books or only for display? Do you have that much to display?

I like the idea of painting the back green as well! I have a large wood frame I’m considering centering there.

You have a ready made setup for both a fireplace and TV shelving. Why would you change it? Where are the other photos we need to see of the entire room so we can suggests ways to work on layout that would give you an elegant fireplace and functional TV watching spot.

I would paint the wall and shelving unit the favored green color. Mount the TV on the center opening (in front of it) easier on the neck and still keeing the fireplce as a focal point in the room.

Add a really great art work over the fireplace, not necessarily this one but something that works with your palette of green, white, gold wood colors.

It doesn't look like a large space so hopefully you've already determined the best furniture layout for your space, and that it would make sense and function better having the TV over the fireplace. Be sure to have the TV mounted on an extension arm so the TV can be pulled out and lowered for proper viewing height. On the bookcase wall, you could either leave the center open or look at having glass doors made for the center and have just one shelf in there for 1-2 large accent pieces to soften the busyness.

I wouldn't paint the back of the bookcases green but rather use accent pieces that tie in with the green fireplace wall, so they pop on the bookcase.

I agree the builtins need a rethink. That white is very stark, the TV in that hole would be too low... Actually for me that entire set up doesn't work under those windows. The jut out under where the TV is to sit has to be encroaching on needed walking space. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be built in three pieces so the middle could easily be removed....

If one were to do it right the fireplace would be moved to where that TV space is..and then think of the floor space one would have with that raised hearth gone!!

I like @bearbev’s idea of bringing in some of the green in your built-in display. And I agree that you might benefit from a mount that would give you the option of lowering and angling the tv - in this case, a drop down mount: mantelmount.com

On the tv area of the built-in, you could consider installing some lighting - maybe remote control puck lights. And/or you could possibly put a lamp there, possibly battery operated lamp - although you may still have setup to plug a lamp in there. You could display art in that spot or maybe a sculptural piece.

I tried to put together some visuals and AI is not cooperating with me this early am - so bear with me. Can you see the art and lamp in what could be a tv niche on the right side wall of built-ins? in pic directly below.

You could also use the space for another tv.

    Some general display ideas:

First that spot above the FP makes the TV too high anfd to have it at proper viewing height will require a pull down as mentioned and that says no FP while watching TV .I would remove all the top part of those builtins and put the TV there perfect viewing height and a bit of storage .. What drove the choice for the green wall? Accent walls are IMO chosen after all the rest of the space is done not a color picked from a hat. You are putting the cart before the horse you have not planned the space and done whatever demolition needs doing . We have no clue as to the rest of the space so pics in a comment are a must. Those cabinets look very country is that your style ? The hearth for the FP very tall and busy too. No way to even ge a hint of your style only your business info on your page .

It all needs to be removed. It looks like the shelves are blocking the bottom half of the windows!! Who does that?? And if it’s a working fireplace, the hearth looks questionable wrt being fireproof. I understand the idea, but it was poorly executed.

Updated photos per request. Thank you for all the helpful thoughts and strong opinions lol. The room is awkwardly shaped and small for a living room space. We would like to the tv up on the mantle because the TV built-in space is way too low. The TV is to look like a piece of frame art which we chose so it doesn’t look like a TV is the focal point of the room. It will fill the entire space on the mantle picture below, added for reference. We are working with what we’ve been given.

Any suggestions on placements of couches and we are thinking we may need to buy new couches to fit the new home

I'm not a fan of placing a TV high up above a fireplace because it's simply not a good height for watching, but some people want that.

I suggest you paint all the wall in the new dark green colour and paint the vent grid on the wall in green also.

Perhaps consider replacing the fan with a more modern less bulky style.

For anyone following this thread, this is a perfect example of why Design Dilemma poster must post photos of the entire space AT THE BEGINNING. Who knew there was a kitchen there? If I knew that, I would not have shown photos with dark green walls and would've suggested painting the entire space a light color that harmonized with the cabinets and flooring. This would've meant less contrast with white built-ins. To back up Patricia Colwell, paint comes last after furnishings are chosen.

Now that I see that big blank wall separating the kitchen from the living room area,, move the TV built-ins there. I assume you will then expose the windows and let in more light, a good thing.

    Layout:

--Float a new sofa to face the windows next to the fireplace . This will also create a passageway behind the living room/TV watching area to the kitchen.

--Get two attractive armchairs for watching TV and position them in front of the other windows with a small table in between and facing the TV wall.

Alternatively, float the new armchairs you will get to face windows next to fireplace and place new sofa under the other windows. to face TV wall.

Just saw the dark wood kitchen. and agree with @housegal200. I would paint the open concept room in the same light colour. The green is much too dark now that I see the kitchen. Bring the green you like perhaps in your new furniture...

You can also paint the wall unit in green rather than all the walls. I would use a satin finish.

And we're STILL missing a photo of the wall with the French Doors. Can you place the seating at an angle to watch TV? Why are the walls so shiny...is the paint still wet?

Paint on a wall should be in a matte or eggshell finish.

Even eggshell is too shiny for me. Any sheen provides the eye with a focal point and diminishes the depth of color.

Can you remove the built-ins? It would give you better seating flexibility.

Two things I immediately noticed, the extremely bulky hearth (and its random tile), as well as the awkwardness of how it joins up with the wall unit (suggest adding 2 shelves in the middle section). I think if you painted all the white green, there will be an uninterrupted flow and if possible, change the mantle and tile to achieve the natural feel you are wanting.

Regarding layout, it’s tough with your furniture and at some point you may want to replace, but give yourself time to live with and define needs and functionality.

I would also remove the shelving, I’d first check to see if the flooring continues underneath — otherwise it’s a bigger project

Yes thank you! I would love to remove the shelving also, but that is a big job which the flooring does not go underneath it. We will also need to have the flooring redone as well at one point.

If it were me, I would paint it the wall color (whatever you choose) so it recedes a bit and then I’d mount the TV floating over the center opening, then I would simply fill the rest of the shelves with books (I would not use the shelves to display “objects” but would want something more homogeneous)

I disagree with posters who are saying the tv will be too high. I've had two home where the tv was mounted above the fireplace and had no problem with it. As for your built-in shelving what function would you want to repurpose it for. The first thing that comes to mind is a home office or a crafts center. Neither may work well having a tv adjacent but if your family doesn't watch a lot of tv it might. If you removed the center portion of lower cabinets that would give you a sport for a desk. The rest of the cabinetry could be used for filing and supplies for a home office or could hold craft materials especially if you added doors to some of the shelving. Good luck!

With the cost of everything being so high right now, I would base pricey decisions on what will be done with the room when you redo the flooring. Come up with a whole room plan for that future renovation that will work with your needs and lifestyle, and use that plan to guide the decisions you are making now. For example, new furniture is expensive, so consider pieces that will work now as well as with a future renovation. Paint is not expensive, so you can go with your dark green now and if you need to change it in the future it’s easy and inexpensive. 🙂
