What is the existing flooring?

it depends on the rug you choose. is it a statement pattern, or merely a floor covering?

what size furniture pieces? A lot of little rugs is not a good look. Do you have a rug in the office? Do you need a runner in front of the sink?

The blue line is more appropriate because you want to leave a walkway from the kitchen to the office, although I think it's still a tad too big. I would have the rug ends sit halfway under each of the sofas so the back legs of each are on the hardwood. Or leave the blue line as is and pull the sofas out more.

It is engineered hardwood flooring throughout the living space, including the kitchen. The Home Office will actually be a bedroom and is carpeted. I will probably put down some rugs in the kitchen to protect the floor as well. I

I haven't committed to the type of rugs yet, but probably more protection vs a statement piece. I also have not committed to the furniture yet, so this is an estimated diagram. I have a leather couch that's about 6' long and 3' deep I was thinking of putting against the windows, and then I am thinking I would get another sofa to form and L-shaped seating area.

Then do the smaller rug and put a runner in the walkway.

If you have no furniture it is too early to choose a rug and for sure only in the actul space having the furniture BTW the red line is including the hall and that is a no

What is the concern with the floor and protecting it? Engineered hardwood (much of it, anyway) is built to last. Who or what do you think will damage it? And what kind of damage are you expecting?

I would choose a rug that takes care of the blue-outlined area (sized more accordingly, as noted above) but otherwise, show off the wood floors!

Hi @BPMBA, I am concerned from daily regular use by people and pets. We found some dinged floor boards during the final walk through, although that could be from the contractors. I just want to make sure we do our best to maintain it. The floor is a beautiful 7-inch planking, so I will definitely show it off.

If you have pets with claws / nails then the floor will show some scratches but there is no way you can eliminate that unless you have wall to wall carpet.

I'd have the builder fix the damaged boards before moving in and know that sooner or later, life will happen and a pet's nails or a rock in someone's shoe or whatever might cause a minor issue with the floor. Meanwhile, ENJOY your new house! There will be a ton of other little things to get temporarily worked up about as you're unpacking and learning to live in a new space. Trust me. :-)
