Cattura Downdraft with range

last year
last modified: last year

Need help with detailed instruction on how to install Best Cattura downdraft behind a range. Instruction manual explains how to install behind a cook top, but no pointers for installing behind a freestanding range, which Best says is an option for this downdraft. Is there any difference between installation with cook top versus behind a range? I think the only difference would be in how you would chose to vent it, but wanted to see if anyone had experience and could provide any additional tips.

Thanks. We have this video already and it addresses installation usung a cook top. We can’t seem to find info on installing behind a range, and whether there are any requirements in terms of spacing distance from the oven, and wall. The blower will be installed remotely under the house to save cabinet space.

Doesn't your contractor know how to do this? Can't he/she read the instructions? (I assume by "book" you mean the installation instructions.)

    From BEST Site:

This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but it may help. (You may have already seen it, though.)

See all comments above. Same video, same book, we’ve seen both. It doesn’t provide detail about how to install this behind a free standing range that that sits against a wall, with no cabinet beneath it like a cook top would have. So, is there a certain distance from the wall, or the actual oven that should be observed for any reason, or any other details specific to installation behind a range that we should know about that might be different from installation behind a cook top?

    Here’s a thought…call the manufacturer.

Did that. Called Best Cattura and they couldnt privide any additional info.

You reverse the plenum, and house the body in the cabinet behind the range. It still takes up the same space as it would under a cooktop, and performs just as badly as it does with a cooktop.

Yup…downdrafts are essentially useless. Get an actual vent hood.

I don't think downdrafts are really meant to be used behind a range. That's probably why you can't find any info about it.

I'm also unclear what space you think you're saving by doing this?

Why not just put in an overhead rangehood, especially since your range is against the wall and not in an island or peninsula? There are decent ones out there that cost less than the downdraft and are much more effective.

Are you trying to DIY this or do you have an experienced contractor doing the work?

I think you can start playing with the parts to see what options you have. You can't position anything where the range is. Figure out where and how to mount parts that usually go under a cooktop. You also have to route the power supply to the range. If you want to insulate the vent from the range back, Rockwool has heatproof board material.

No cabinet behind the range, just a wall. The remote blower and most of the ducting will be installed under the house. I did speak to Best Cattura manufacturer and have a better understanding of where and how it sits behind the range, and he admitted that there isn’t really any instructions with diagrams showing options for placement behind a range, but now we have a better picture in our heads. Yes, I have a contractor. He has good knowledge about how to set up the vent, ducting, and blower, although he’s not done this before. Just didn‘t fully understand how it is supported, and finding a new video helped, and the manufacturer explained that although there are some brackets that provode support on the bottom, and sides, the bulk of the weight is supported by the countertop.

Who has a downdraft against a wall???? Do you have the extra depth cabinets required for all of this? You have the opportinity to easily do a standard overhead hood that is so much more effective. Why are you not doing that??? This makes no sense.

You will have to lose most of the cabinet next to the range, left or right. You also need extra deep cabinets and counters to make any of this work. Otherwise there is no room behind the range for the mechanism . But if your range is against a wall, the only real

option considered should be an overhead hood. Why would you even try to hack something like this?

To Tush: You don’t know all the details. There is a breakfast bar over the stove. I already spoke to the manufacturer, who has given me some guidance.

Monique: As stated in the comments, the blower and ducting will be underneath the house with a remote blower, a common configuration. The Best Cattura accomodates this configuration, allowimg the plenum to be placed in the front, back, side, or bottom of the unit to accommodate housing the blower and ducting underneath.

Dan: Under the house. I have a raised foundation.

Wow, you sure went from being completely clueless to being snarky clueless pretty fast. What you do not seem to realize that the actual pop up mechanism has depth. Without you designing for that from the beginning, with extra depth cabinets and counters, your range will stick out extra deep from the surrounding cabinets. And the popup can still hit the overhang of the breakfast bar, even if you have the extra depth. The math is critical. This is not a retrofittable option to replacing a downdraft range. And if it is an initial design, it's such a poor functioning option that no one should ever consider it.

Minardi: considered all that already, and prepared for extra depth. We weren’t sure how far from the wall it is placed, but later found another video from the manufacturer comfirming placement one inch from the wall, which was the biggest question we had when I posted this. Info Information about this is difficult to find, and I don’t know why the manufacturer didn’t provide more, especially since they created this appliance with that particular option, and when I spoke to the rep at Best, he couldn’t explain it either. There is no overhang from the breakfast bar on the side where the oven is. When its all said and done, will post pics!
