Decora Cabana stain color

Does anyone have an idea if there is a stain I can purchase that would be the closest match to Cabana in the Decora cabinet line? I’m thinking about purchasing unfinished cabinets and staining them as close as I can get to Cabana. I really don’t need high end cabinets like Decora, it’s only this color I like. It could save several thousands of dollars. I might have made the splurge, but was disappointed to find out they couldn’t make one of the custom cabints I want, a slim pantry.

Finishing cabinets is 60% of the work of cabinets. Decora will sell you the stain, but "a stain" is only part of the entire finishing process. Staining is way harder than painting. The result depends on the species and quality of the wood that you start with to start with. Different woods will take stain differently. Different cuts of wood will take stain differently. Different experience levels will get entirely different results. The fact that you think you can do this as the easier and cheaper route means you would end up with a complete disaster. It's not easy or cheap to get a great stain job. And you ruin all that effort and trialing learning expense by trying to put it on cheap $1.98 cabinets.

Keep what you have and figure out something else. Decora is just a mid grade line in the world of costs and quality. Average. It's not even close to an upper end custom product. If you want an upper end custom product, you need to move to Omega. They can make anything. Save your money and get what you want, if you cannot change your wants.

But, what is the specialty pull out pantry that you want? They make all kinds of pull out pantries. If you don't have a spec book, you'd never know all the options that exist.

Yes, I attempted to get a spec book and the dealer told me they no longer post them online for the public to see. The pantry is a 48” x 70”, 16” deep with two doors and shelves that go all the way across., with a couple of drawers for spices, not a pull out.

I was quoted 38,000. for a few banks of cabinets on either side of my stove, and sink, and a cabinet over the fridge, and two upper cabinets, not including tax and installation.

For $38,000, I would think the designer would sit down with you for an hour and flip through the spec book with you to look at the pantries that are available.

Thats another story. I had a confirmed appointment with him and was prepared to put half down on Decora, but to make a long story short, he stood me up, handed me off to some other guy who was a dolt who started messing up my design while the guy I was supposed to meet with was handling the door traffic. After an hour and a half of waitging for the guy I was supossed to meet with, I walked out. They lost a deal. I’ve been through several other flakey dealers like this, been doing this since August. I did get a second quote for the Decora at 27,000, no tax or installatio. I may go throuh them because the dealer is very responsive and she’ll probably let me peruse the specs. But, I’m still contemplating having my handyman stain them if I can find the right color, although admit, I’m beginning to doubt it will work.

Part of your issue is that you are asking for things that are terrible ideas that no one with any sense would ever do, custom or not. Like staining crapola unfinished cabinets yourself. You are not getting any shelving ever 48” wide with a clear span of shelving. It would sag. That is 2 24” units.

You have to be willing to pay a design deposit to get design help. Otherwise you are just dealing with cabinet sellers who think you are a clueless lookylou….

To HU: Thanks for your absolutely inaccurate and useless comment. I hired a wood worker for my step in pantry who built shelves that are 56” wide, and certainly don’t sag, who can build the custom cabinet I want if I chose to have him do it. So yes, I WILL have the custom cabinet I want, one way or the other, Decora, or not. You obviously don’t know what you are talking about. I certainly wouldnt attempt staining myself, I intend to hire a professional if I chose to go that route. Duh. Also, I’m not a looky loo. Apparently you didn’t read all the comments above.

I'm concerned that you think that you found somone reputable to create something for you, that really should not be created. Just because someone says yes, and takes your money, does not mean that they are a professional. Even 1" thick solid should not span that distance for pantry shelving. It WILL sag. Guaranteed.

Finishing your own cabinets is like finishing your own car. You’d already need to own the sprayer and booth, and have an account with the local pro supply house, to think about it.

You need intermediate supports and a front shelf lip for a 48” wide anything meant to have things stored on it. Otherwise it would have about a 10 lb weight limit.
