what color rug in kitchen

I have BM Simply White Cabinets, white subway tile backsplash, fantasy brown cabinets, brushed nickel hardware and now I need a 4x6 rug in the u-shaped working area. Wall paint is Edgecomb Gray but is more noticeable in another part of kitchen. Should I keep colors in the gray, cream, beige neutral scheme or something to contrast?

Whatever color you like the appearance of with your otherwise neutral kitchen.

Why do you need a kitchen rug?

Sure, it’s a personal thing. But there’s also “ visual pressure “. A kitchen does not have to have the same vibe as a family room. A kitchen ideally would not have vintage crumbs along the baseboards ( I say ideally because, I battle crumbs. Aiming for partial rescue by future undermount sink.

In this kitchen, all of h th d accessories and counter items are neutrals that blend in with the surfaces.

Also, a rug that looks nice when photoshopped into a tidy kitchen, may add a lot of visual clutter during high-intensity kitchen work.

As another practical matter, I find that sizing is problematic. If it’s quite bug then it IS a nightmare of baseboard -edge cleaning. If it’s a foot or so in, you’re half on/ off all the time , or tripping. Kinds like some dining room rug dilemmas. And if it’s kinda big ( don’t know these dimensions just from photo) , it is a lot to wash a washable rug.

I’d probably take time to pick an accent color and gradually hunt down the minimal amount of counter accessories, dish towels, some serving pieces, maybe a Dutch oven.

@ffpalms I love that rug you posted. I’ve been looking on Ruggable and Tumble for washable rugs. Not sure if I need them bc we have a rug shampoo machine. Wayfair is okay but I worry about the quality.

The rug I posted is from Urban Outfitters if you want to check it out, though it doesn’t look like they offer it in a 4X6.

@marmiegard_z7b I want a rug or two to warm up the room. The tile alone is cold. The amount of white calls for some color. In choosing white cabinets and backsplash I wanted the Fantasy Brown countertop to be the focal point. Now to warm it up I’m not sure what color(s) will complement the countertops or try to dethrone them. Some of the terms you use are confusing like “visual pressure”, vintage crumbs, and all of “h th d” accessories. Sorry, I am really green when it comes to interior design. I’ve had a decorator in the past but can’t afford one now.

Sorry, that’s my phone messing with the words for some of it, & other is my twisted humor.

Visual pressure to me is stuff like Instagram and even Photoshopping giving a room “ looks”, color , materials, that make a nice picture without accounting for practicality and how it plays out in daily maintenance. And declarations of , you need some color from a rug! In kitchens and dining rooms that are actually in daily use.

Vintage crumbs are crumbs, bits of parsley, that have , um, been there awhile. Occur in inverse proportion to how hard it is to sweep, vacuum, run a damp paper towel. Or to obstructions and crumb- catchers like rug edges. So it’s not just cleaning a rug, it’s having two different floor surface materials that are cleaned differently, in a mess- prone area. I was just pointing that out, because some people haven’t ever tried that out, but it may not bother you at all, which is fine.

Supposed to have said just , “ the counter accessories” — yours have no color, hence a missed opportunity for color without the drawbacks of a rug. Maybe there’s a wall we’re not seeing that is space for some art work. Would every home with a neutral kitchen need a rug ?

I’ve been shopping for two rugs. I found one that I love and there was another one (see pic) that I liked but husband and daughter do not. Let me know your thoughts. I’m burned out looking online so I went to a local store. Everyone likes the lighter one (right of counter stools). The one in the working area/u shape is the one hubby doesn’t like. I do like it and have final say. Because he’s not crazy about it, I am trying to find a coordinating rug. He mentioned getting two the same but not crazy about that. Too boring. Pics in next post.

    Light one is fav.

I have moved the light floral one in the working area and contemplating returning to the store to retrieve the dark one. I returned it because I was outnumbered but now I’m thinking I just want to be done with it. I brought two small 2x3 home to test the colors. Hubs doesn’t like and I’m not in love with them.

I really like this one. It has both the color of your counters and your floor, and has little bits of rust red to complement the brick fireplace.

@ffpalms there are two rugs in this pic. Both have the rust. Do you like both or just the dark one?

It’s the dark one I really like.

Are you putting that big rug in the kitchen working area?

I was planning to. That way I have rug under my feet at range, sink and prep area at the peninsula.

Just mat at sink area is needed…what size table will sit on the dining area rug?

That area is not big enough for a table. If we eat in kitchen, it is at the peninsula.

So just leaving it an open area? no table correct…I think you need some contrast and be sure you get a rug pad for it… would advise you not to put a big rug in that kitchen work area…making it smaller in front of sink.

It’s not just open area. There is a chair (blue) in front of a bookcase for a reading area plus a fireplace. As you walk past that, there are 3 stairs down to a family room. It doesn’t feel like an open space. It’s pretty narrow.

@Home Interior with Ease thank you for the pics. I like the bottom two best. Where could I find them?
