Kids room - Stuck! Something seems off

last year
last modified: last year

I can't put my finger on it but something feels off in my daughters' room. We inherited all the furniture in this room from family. I think it might be the matching white set that is throwing me off (the bed is not part of the set but it looks like it could be). Should I strip or paint one of the pieces? Maybe the beds need to be darker for more contrast? Or is there something else that I am totally missing?

I color-drenched the room in blush pink which I like. I also love the window treatments. The floors are pretty banged up (which is why the rug is not centered - it is covering a bad spot) and will likely be redone next year to a slightly darker shade.

It’s a pretty room but that big, dark, heavy armoire doesn’t fit with everything else. If you need it for closet space, I’d switch it with a much smaller one in light colored wood.

How old is the child (or children)?

I agree that the dark armoire overpowers everything. The white furniture looks nice for a girl's room. I would remove the round table to the right of the bed and move that bed closer to the door, giving more space between the beds and it will balance the beds on the rug. If needed, get a larger bedside table between the beds that they can share. A larger lamp by the chair would look better, I think. You could place the round table to the left of that chair.

If you are refinishing the floors next year, I would work with what's there for now and reassess when you have to move the furniture out for the floors. (I do agree that the armoire dominates the space and doesn't really match the white furniture, though, so if you keep that long-term you could potentially tie it into the other pieces by bringing in other darker tones through picture frames/drawer pulls/etc.) I'm assuming this is for teenage (or adult?) daughters given the formality and lack of toys--do they have opinions about the furniture? Maybe see what they like and dislike after using the current pieces for a year or so.

I love much about this room. Agree the beds seem crunched together. I love the way the bed side tables are not matchy match. My guess there's a TV in the large dark armoire. Once you get the floors done I would match them and the armoire for wood tone. Right now you have two single hits of different wood tones so it looks disjointed. I am wondering what the beds look like made? Are the spreads a splash of color? I think they should be the boldest color statement in the room.

The tall armoire is the darkest and tallest element and no matter what it will always be an accent piece. I would move it between the two windows opposite the beds instead to act as the accent piece in the room. I would also paint it and the beds a colour. Maybe in a french country cottage style.

If it would fit, that's a great idea to move the armoire to the wall opposite the foot of the beds! It seems to be looming over everything where it is and placing it as the focal point will make it seem more cohesive.

The room is adorable. It needs a little more light or maybe brighter bulbs in dimmers.

Can you paint the armoire a fun girly color? Maybe like this...

It does not say kids room to me but how old is the child? I think the white works why not paint the armoire unless it trully is precious antique in which case then other dark pieces are needed to bring the space together .I do agree between the windows a better spot and what is in it ? I have to say I hate TV in any bedroom but for sure in a young kids space . I agree the flooring is going to be done so the rug stays where it is for now. A bit more info about the child is helpful and the use for the pieces. It has a wonderful elegant french feel that is pretty cool if you have a girly girl.

I love Boxerpal’s suggestion of a pink armour- so fun and pretty! The chair would be great in a fun fresh print and some soft accessories and pics would add some youth and whimsy to the room!

Thank you for everyone's suggestions! I can't figure out how to reply directly to someones comment so I will answer some questions here.

-My girls are young (8&7) but we keep all toys in the basement and leave the rooms as homework and relaxing spaces

-They are girly girls and I wanted to create a space that would grow with them so we don't need to necessarily redesign but just bring in different accessories and textiles

-The Armoire holds winter coats and other bulky items - not a TV

    - As I look at the pictures again I see all the places I should've styled and fluffed before taking pictures. I didn't even process the beds weren't made (bc for 8 & 7 this is pretty clean lol) but their spreads are a bright pink with white and bits of green in in.

-The reason I have the armoire there is because we have baseboard heaters on the wall opposite the girls beds which would make it stick out by about 3in from the wall. Do you think that would look strange? I am willing to give it a try!

What shade of pink on the armoire do you think would work? Like the walls but a few shades darker?

If you paint e armoire I would not do pink just a nice colr that works with the rest of the furniture. I guess you would need to see how it looks moved out from the wall a bit. I found with my granddaughters they were very girly at that age but soon were changing fave color and even waht was hung on the walls so keep it neutral so that those changes can happen later with bedding etc. My one girl went from fairy princess to goth in 3 yrs so be prepared .

Are the curtains touching the baseboard heating units a concern?

  • last year

While the drapes look nice, you shouldn't have full drapes in front of baseboard heating. They're also covering up wainscot. You have a lot of windows, so you're probably not going to want to do this, but they should be hemmed to sill length or just removed. I have a French country bedroom, so I like the style, but right now the room looks busy, so removing the curtains might not be the worst thing. I love the rug and the wall color. I agree with everyone else about the armoire.

It’s a lovely room and I’m sure your girls are excited. Maybe they would like to choose accessories/pictures of things they love so room reflects more of their personality (my daughter loved horses at their age).

Agree about painting the armoire and maybe narrow down to a few pinks (add in some greens also) and let them choose. In a few years they won’t want as much pink, so keep that in mind. Also, painting means a lot more work to prep and perhaps consider chalk paint. Anne Sloan carries lots of choices (i like the duck egg).

The baseboard heaters are hydronic (water heat) and I built the baseboard heater covers oversized to allow for a barrier between the curtains and the actual heating mechanism. Also the baseboard heater covers are made out of wood so in terms of conducting heat vs metal it is not a concern

Beautiful room - lucky girls! I would paint the armoir same color as dresser and/or beds. Better to disappear than stand out. Let us know how you proceed.

I agree with others about the armoire - maybe a pretty sage green?

Is it just me or does the rug seem sideways? I am thrown by the direction of the pattern - not sure if you can turn it an still cover the spot on your floor.

Is that chair comfortable? If not, I would get rid of it and get something nice with an ottoman.

While the curtains are nice, I would have concern about them on the heaters.

If you are going to strip and paint the armoire - ask the girls what color they would like ( " I color-drenched the room in blush pink which I like " ) - They are old enough to have an opinion.

The room does lack some of the girls' personalities. Do you have any artwork, great photos, craft projects they have done that can be hung up to personalize the space a little more?

It's a great start and looks like you are going to get it sorted out!

Be sure to post after pictures - good luck

I would not paint that armoire but consider adding mirrors or glass to the front of the doors…with glass you could paint the inside white and the girls could display dolls or stuffed animals…or with mirrors would add a very pretty elegant look and lighten up the overall look…very easy to do….I had my kitchen cabinet fronts removed and inserted antique mirror..so pretty very french vintage.

Hannah, I love that light wood dresser. I didn’t see it before I made my post (board is being wonky for me). I think it especially fits the style of the chair. And that bedding is beautiful!

You’re clearly very talented at accomplishing decorating with a collected look; it’s wonderful.

I just love the room. In addition to altering the armoire, maybe consider reupholstering the chair. I really like the chair, but the pattern on pattern look of the room is SO lovely, and maybe the chair is a missed opportunity to add a little more?

You have already done a wonderful job, and the room is beautiful.

oooohhh I am in love with this space. I love that your little darlings helped pick out what they like. And the little dresser is spot on.

What I love the most about this post is that you are up-cycling and working with what you have. Good for you!!! The vibe is soothing, wholesome, genuine, kind, sweet, natural, warm, cozy and friendly.

I like what you are doing with the room. When you are ready to refinish the floors I would not go too dark. Dark floors show every bit of dirt.

Yes remove the armoire…shift beds to center of rug...move round table next to chair..add larger chest between beds…I think adding something on the beds in a solid pink will give a more cohesive look with the printed rug and quilts…adding some contrast..such a sweet room! just a folded cozy blanket at end of beds would be so cute. both on Amazon.

I am quite in love with this room. It is a day dreamy get lost in and relaxing girls room. Such great reuse of furniture and all comes together well. Love the rug, desk placement, chandelier, and I'm wild about the wall and drape colors. How did you find such a close match?

The only thing I'd change is angle the arm chair so it is on the diagonal. And, paint if you don't mind painting the armoire, I think it might be nice in a lighter color. Maybe let the girls decide. I'd either paint it the same color as the walls or a super light, very pale blue. Lucky kids to have such a talented parent decorating their room.

  • last year

I LOVE me a bombay chest! But I will caution against for two reasons. #1-I would imagine it's too tall. The desk would work between the beds if you are willing for the bedside table to be taller than the mattress. It was a suggestion I contemplated but knew it would get push back due to it's height. The desk would be a great solution between the beds for space, large enough to share, and keeping things from getting too cluttered. However, bedside tables do not tend to rise much above the mattress. #2 Thus far the eclectic pulling of pieces is working for you --but you want to keep with the repeated pattern of two or three hits of an element. As I suggested earlier if you could get your floors and the armoire closer together in wood tones it would not be so bossy in the room.

I ahve hot water heating with rads low on the walls next to the floor and have furniture sitting up to the rads in places and even drapes that hang in fornt there is never so much heat anything will catch on fire but wood rad covers are a bit odd I have nice metal ones that we bought to replace the old ratty looking ones and those seem to work well

Having the desk between the beds will push the beds apart to the degree that the rug may look too small. No? Worth a shot trying since it’s just moving furniture.

  • last year

@arcy_gw I am wondering the same if it will feel too large. I am actually considering trying to raise the girls mattresses a bit as they already feel somewhat low and my kids are at an age where rolling off the bed is not a concern. Thoughts on that?

@thinkdesignlive I was thinking the same it may feel off with the size of the rug but I might just try it out. I was also thinking having the desk chair in the middle of the beds might feel odd?

  • last year

@Kendrah thank you for your kind words! The drapes are a cream velvet so it is not an exact match but they go so beautifully together. Honestly just a happy accident :)

  • last year

I think it would look great if you raised the beds a little.

  • last year

I agree on raising the beds and was going to suggest it in my prior post. Would the bedding then seem too short?

  • last year

Having the desk by the window makes it have it’s own, separate feeling space in the room, which is really nice. The beds look good close together. Makes it easier to pass books and stuffed animals back and forth at night too. I know from experience! Plus it will push the bed too close to the wardrobe.
