Fake or not - and that's certainly a strong possibility - there is not enough detail provided in that photo to offer any kind of identification.

It doesn't look real to me because ferns generally have croziers (fiddleheads) that unfurl to make a full-size frond. They don't tend to have fronds of various sizes, like those fronds at the bottom of the pot. Of course, there are a gazillion types of fern and non-ferns with ferny foliage, such as asparagus "fern".

Fern ID is tricky. It really helps to see where the spores are and how the croziers (fiddleheads) emerge in the spring. Not to mention get a better look at the fronds.

The pot does have the algae associated with a real plant having been in it, but it doesnt have a saucer, which means to me that its fake since any fern looking like that would want moist soil.

Such rusticated pots are pretty common on fakes. But it does look like the Pteris. Since this species isn't hardy outdoors in the UK, the pot is probably just staging. An indoor pot wouldn't have algae.

Yes, I suppose it is impossible that the pot was in a greenhouse in the UK and the algae grew there. /s

I think it's a real Pteris straminea. They do have shorter, mature leaves, and the base appears wider, like it's actually growing out of soil? The subtle curving and slightly purple coloring of the stems wouldn't be captured in a plastic fake imo.
