Help me hide these floors!

last year

Eventually I’d love to replace the floors, but for now I need to find a rug color that helps hide/compliment the horrible orange color. Any suggestions are appreciated!

A rug with the same colors in soft tones and muted pattern.

Wedding pictures should be placed in the bedroom, the den, down a hallway, some room less public than the living room. Besides the scale of the photos is too small for the wall.
The blue cabinet doesn't work in this room. It's more of a kitchen piece.

    Would something like this work?

@Hilary L that rug looks great!

Would the corner cabinet work at all if maybe it were a different color?

The corner cupboard a bit casual and Colonial in style, besides there is no room on this wall. Even the table on the other side of the sectional hangs past the edge of the wall. That's why I took the cabinet out so you could slide the sectional down and make room for the end table.

Your home is kind of desert, global, in style and appearance with the arch and the brick flooring.

Besides, what exactly does the cabinet hold that so important it be jammed in next the the sectional? Furnishings need space to breathe in the space. I'm not sure the other furnishings are located in the best positions in this room.

I would disagree with the desert global style. The home is 20 years old so I believe it was built with someone’s take on the Tuscan style that was popular then. This is the adjoining dining room if it helps you understand more of the “style” I am trying to incorporate.

I like the idea of a neutral jute rug in the space, in a size that will cover the area appropriately with the furniture. I wouldn't fret about the nice corner cabinet color, but after you've landed on a rug that you like then you'll know if changing the color of the corner cabinet should be considered so it complements the space based on the rug and other accents you have going on. Painting it the same as the wall color might be a consideration. If budget allows, you could get a narrow end table that doesn't protrude past the end of the sectional.

I hate jute rugs they are horrible for shedding and on bare feet but a sythetic sisal could work the bigger the better . Maybe look at carpet insted cut as large as possible and maybe a pale green to bw a bit of a neutral. I have no idea what desert global style is BTW . I agree family photos should not be displayed in public spaces my opinion . I bet you are a young couple newly married and happy and want to show that but a really nice piece of art would bea better choice there. The corner cbinet is not ideal there I much prefer to have good lighting so end tables and lamps that do not have to match . Then maybe that cabinet in a DR whre it would be a better fit . This is new to you space it takes time to find your style and does not all have to done instantly . The next time you buy furniture no chaise in a space where you entertain . It would be nice to see the whole room . I think it takes time to find your style and honestly it does not need a name at all just your style.

I think the wall paint is the main problem -- there is no contrast between the sofa and the wall paint, and the greyness of the paint does absolutely nothing to complement the floors, it detracts from them. The wall color doesn't look good in the kitchen area, either - it's just totally wrong for that floor.

I bet dollars to donuts if you warmed up the paint color, the floor is going to look much, much better. A rich cream color would look beautiful here, like the first photo Beverly posted (with the chartruese throwing hanging off the back of the sofa).

You can always drape a throw and pillows on the sofa to bring in some warmth to that to tie in with a warmer wall paint.

Pick a simple neutral wall to wall carpet and have it cut to what size you need they will bind it for you..that way you get a perfect fit and it is budget friendly…have it only show about 1’ around the perimeter of the brick….make sure to add a good pad under it.

Here are examples of custom cut and bond rugs…the lower photo is my bedroom with carpet cut and bond for us..we love it.

Agree with warming up the wall color (are the walls grey? hard to tell on my screen) and getting a nice neutral broadloom cut to fit - very economical way to deal with a large room - we did this in my son’s room 10 years ago - it still looks brand new

The brick is interesting for sure…another idea to tone it down and fit your style is to limewash it…Example

Well I really like your cabinet and the rug you picked out looks great. Your pictures are very nice.

Do a rustic feel with paint and wash.

To answer some of the questions - the paint color is Accessible Beige. I do not know what color “cream” would work because my kitchen is all a cream color already. I would much rather replace the floor than go through the pain of painting the entire house again. I have looked in to stripping and white washing the brick but no one in my area says it’s possible to strip. I’ve had several companies come out. IF I were do to a custom cut rug, what color would I even consider?

What? I don't see a lick of cream in your kitchen besides the pattern in the area rug. On my monitor, your paint is grey, your splash is light grey, and the cabs are cool-toned white. There's no cream in those colors to be found.

It is probably the lighting & the camera. The cabinets are panda white which is shown in the photo below. I have nothing in my home that’s stark white, it’s all creamy white.

I actually like your floors but that doesn’t matter since your opinion is what counts. And not to scare you but someday when you do replace these floors just know a new paint job will be needed after that (very messy job to jackhammer all that brick). Anyway, if you don’t have pets a good wool carpet cut and bound to size is great. If you have pets then a pet protect fiber like Dream Weaver (they have some loop patterns with striae in them and I think they look like real wool but they are pet friendly).

Don't be scared of replacing the floors at some point! In our previous house we replaced several thousand square feet of Saltillo tile from floors and walls. We hated the color and the uneven nature of that tile made it hard to live with.

Yes, removing the tile was noisy and somewhat dusty, but they get the demolition done really quickly ... and the end result is well worth it.

    No regrets!

So many to choose from! great perk is you can bring home samples from your local carpet store before buying.

If warming the paint color is a suggestion for the floors, would a color like this work? These are the floors and paint color in the master bedroom.

The paint color will not really make a difference and with your very light neutral sectional it will make the walls look yellow…I would consider adding some velvet rust pillows mixed with your blue accent color pillows onto the sectional and add a neutral carpet..it will help bridge the color gap…paint the photo frames a more bronze color.

Bringing in just a bit of warmth onto the sectional with pillows a soft neutral throw and adding a custom carpet..will make the room cohesive.

As far as the rug size, how big should it be? This is another angles of the room.

You leave at least 1’ of flooring showing around the perimeter….so measure the entire room we can help you determine best size

  • last year

Ok, so would it stop at the walk area between chaise and chairs or extend under the chairs also?

Under chairs too….just measure the entire room wall to wall

  • last year

What about the area where it intersects with the dining room? Do I just measure straight across

  • last year

The floors are a bit bossy but for some reason I kinda like them. But I get it.. We had saltilo tile and that had to be jack hammered out. It was so worth it. Changing those floors will transform your space.

I like the idea of a jute Synthetic or not or sisal rug the warmth can really tone down any floor.

Wedding photos are lovely. Truly lovely but I always feel like they belong in the master bedroom unless they are of your adult child and then they need to go in their bedroom or maybe the guest room.

Here are some similar homes that are embracing the brick floors but using some great rugs to cover them a bit

I would measure from the sectional wall to the TV wall, and then the chair wall to the opposite side.

A few other rug options if you want pattern:

I did change the wall color behind the sectional in all of these to something other than the sectional color.

A large area rug, perhaps a 9 x 12 could work. It hard to tell if you can bring the 2 brown leather armchairs forward into the conversation group. At least all the front legs should sit on the rug. I I suggest a neutral rug either a sisal or a cut & bond rug can be smooth or with a texture. There doesn't seem to be much room for the corner cabinet might be a good idea if you can relocate it somewhere else. You should also lower the 3 frames above the sofa.

Ok no worries about the chaise..thought if it could flip..you would have a bit more room to pull those chairs away from the windows a bit…..did you measure the entire room?

    Sorry for the delay on measuring but it’s 19 F x 15 F 10 in
