Diana, thank you!! As u see, my cabinets r oak but I stained them walnut yrs ago to cover the worn areas and neutralize the orange tone. I toyed with painting them but after much thought re color and fear I’d regret it, I decided to embrace the dark cabinets and go w it. I even painted my island a dark green to coordinate w my 20 yo wallpaper. Thank you again for your nice compliment!!

Just curious what product you used to stain the cabinets? Are they oak? so many homeowners ask how to tone down the honey oak and you did a great job!

Diana, yes they are oak. They were a very orange honey tone finish before. i just used a regular minwax wood stain in a walnut finish. i lightly sanded them first, then used the stain. i used 2 coats just to really knock down the orange and hide the grain more but one coat could have sufficed. they have held up for yrs so i decided to not paint since i have grown to appreciate the walnut look. some ppl have used a black stain and accomplished the same thing but i wanted a wood look. It has helped me be more satisfued w my kitchen!!

Stain looks nice. Did you put a top coat over the walnut stain?

Rug is fine as long as not a trip hazard. Finally convince husband we don’t need a rug in front of sink, just wipe up any spills, and it is so liberating to not have to be always washing a rug and not worrying about tripping.

Do you have a mat outside the door? If so might suggest you dispense with the rug altogether.

Tina no poly but a good idea!!!

Norwood: hadn’t thought about that, good idea! You’re right it’s not really necessary. I do like one at the sink just because it feels better w a rug. Mine is completely washable too,

You can’t get less of a contrast and being a neutral shade, it’s a safe choice (as is your dining area rug). I feel though it‘s boring and will be a pain at the door especially, both sliding and keeping clean.

Consider a fun, padded vinyl and suggest using green to coordinate with your granite and the wall color. Attaching a link (see video, attributes and choices, but note padded mats are not great with pets‘ nails). There are thiner mats more suitable with pets, if interested.

I like the rugs you chose … and wow, your cabinets turned out so nice. Great job!

And I love your plate arrangement on the wall. Such a lovely dining room, with wonderful light.

Just a heads-up about certain vinyl rugs — I have a Hudson & Vine 24“x77” vinyl runner in my laundry room, which also goes to our garage, so gets a lot of foot traffic daily. I absolutely LOVE it, it’s so charming and makes me smile, but it is very lightweight and moves around. It doesn’t have much padding or grip.

That doesn’t bother me too much being a runner, and in that room, but I just wanted to share my experience. I personally wouldn’t ever get one smaller, especially for in front of a door. I’m thinking of getting another one for my kitchen, but it’ll be an area rug size.

    This is mine:

Thank you Jilly!! it doesnt show up well in the pics but my island is a dark olive green that coordinates (hopefully) w the wallpaper of my breakfast nook. thats why i chose a neutral rug. i really appreciate your feedback about the rugs!!

Here’s the island; tough to choose a green that coordinates. Couldn’t find a blue I loved ( which would bring out blue from plates), so went neutral

    The dark stain looks great.

What is your counter? It works perfectly with cabinets.
