Help with a dated dining table

Trying to decide if there is anything I can do with this traditional style dining set to give the room a more casual look?

Lovely….oh the painted chairs…..yes in a creamy white will look perfect! oh and you need a set of botanicals on that big wall in the dining room!

Ok. Thank you so much for your help!!!

As you can see from my other room. I don't like a lot of color! My daughter in law calls my house the colorless house!!😂

I am a neutral girl myself..just keep it creamy and simple subtle floral botainicals with white or dark wood frames would be beautiful..just oaint the same creamy color on the buffet.

I will. Can't wait to get it all pulled together!!

One last question. What do you think about this print. My accent colors if any are soft pinks and green usually

I thought with all the chairs white it might add a nice splash of color or too much???

    Not too much at all…

I can get it in a pretty large size which I thought maybe just it instead of grouping. I like the idea of grouping if I could get 4 with these colors would be pretty also

I painted my traditional dining room chairs.

Yes you did tell me that and sent a picture I see you now have a new rug. Goes very well with the table and chairs. Good job

Oh I just looked back. I think it is the same rug. Must be the lighting. It goes perfect!!

Not feeling the art at all..I think you need traditional country…maybe something more shabby chic/country like your pillows…framed with a mat not a production canvas.

Your furnishings and your living room or more contemporary and the dining room is more traditional and contemporary with some of the other furniture

GM! So--game plan: paint or spillover the chairs white/distressed white.

Then: figure out what you are going to use it for other than holiday dining.

    Then: inspo?

So speaking as an artist here, I always have a problem with the concept that the Art has to match the decor. I think it’s possible to put whatever you like on the walls. But in an ideal world, the art on the wall should not be handmaiden to the furniture. Having said that there’s always a range of possibilities. I spend a lot of time thinking about what’s on the walls so I’m not suggesting ignoring the concept of the art as part of the space.

If your plan is to add more white furniture (chairs, sideboard with white bottom), painting the walls may make the room pop a bit more. You said you like neutrals so you can choose a paint with just a hint of color.

I know exactly what your saying. It was the color in the art I really liked not the abstract but was trying to talk myself into it and your comment made me realize that! Thank you! I did not think abstract was the right thing just loved the color palette! I will continue to look!

I came across this home in England this morning, and it reminded me of your dining room. The all-white look works because of the rustic beams above and contrast in the adjoining room, but it is interesting nonetheless:

Don't think there is much you can do to the furniture to make it more casual. Would suggest you replace it unless it has a lot of sentimental value for you.

Oops! I meant paint or slipcover the shelves! Auto-correct. 😒😁

Diana, I like that look alot

I think a shabby chic look would make the furniture look a lot more casual. I painted the base of my dining table with off-white chalk paint, then gently scraped the paint to make the table look worn. I’m very happy with it.

Amanda thank you! That is my plan

Chalk paint works well, easy to use and no prep! Instead of wax for the finish you can use a chalk paint lacquer which is a varnish that won't yellow over time.

Both my table and chairs were done with chalk paint. And they’re both holding up well.

Yes, you did see a different rug in a different photo. The “new” one is deep turquoise, which looks better with the white painted chairs.

Totally agree with Liasch about art. Typically if you choose a piece you love, it will work in your space and it should stir a little emotion every time you look at it. Choosing Art that perfectly matches your decor can be a bit boring. You have a lot to think about Jane! So many options for this room.

I know you love the colors in the art you chose and that’s why you chose it, but I think an abstract floral art in those colors would fit better in your home.

Thank you all again for taking the time to inspire me. I plan to get started soon

Hello, I had a little fun this morning trying to get back to sleep. Ditto to the Houzzers who said darken the walls. I also though maybe you could bring in the red from the family room pillows, maybe in curtains, art, cushions, or maybe a soft red on the walls. Then I found some other ideas on Google image and Houzz. Do any of these appeal to you, or fit what you had in mind?

I think you should go ahead and paint those chairs. You could even paint the chandelier.

Actually they do. I love the French country look but my house is so traditional and I just don't have the right pieces to pull it off so I'm thinking maybe shabby chic. A lot of the farmhouse stuff I like also but I can't decide to keep it on the pretty side on go farmhouse. Just tired of traditional. Thank you for all the pics. Making me want to try to do French country

lisedv, Have any idea what the base coat might be on the table? That's the exact look I would like to get

Yes you could paint them do what you love if you want to paint the chairs or cover them and French country does have some black but if you want to paint the candy you could paint that too or buy a new one whatever you prefer to do

Unfortunately cannot tell from a computer screen. I would suggest you get some sample jars of paint (Benjamin Moore has some (maybe other makes also) or Chalk Paint from your area) and do some testing on a piece of wood to see the result.

Just a few accessory changes would update your living room to coordinate with your new dining room look! Bring in some new white lamps, white accent pillows and perhaps some green to coordinate with your print existing pillows. Fluff them up, and arrange differently instead of all along the back.
