help us pick shower tiles

Our bathroom is only a couple of years old but the prior owners had some shoddy work done and the shower pan is failing. We have to tear out and redo the whole shower ($$$$) so figure we might as well choose tiles we love. Any suggestions for replacement tiles?

Is this your bathroom? Replacing only shower pan and wall tile? Reusing the door and fixed panels if this is your shower?

Yes, this is my bathroom. Replacing shower pan and wall tiles and floor tiles in shower. Hoping to reuse the glass panel and door and we’ll keep the steam shower and fixtures.

Sounds like you are keeping the beige bathroom floor tile, so that is what you have to coordinate any new tile with.

Are you sure the shower pan is the culprit and not the plumbing?

Ugh, all style and no substance. I hate the former contractor on your behalf.

Are the tiles on the window wall the same as the tiles in the shower? The wall looks beige and the shower looks white but that might just be the lighting.

...and we’ll keep the steam shower and fixtures.

If you want to keep it a steam shower... You need to make sure that all of the surfaces have a continuous vapor barrier (< 5 perms) applied under the tile and scratch coat, otherwise you'll end up with rot and mold in your walls. It's amazing how often this isn't done in America.

The ceiling appears to be flat, it should be sloped.

    I don't see any ventilation?

Yes, the tiles on the wall and the current shower tiles March. They’re both white, but looks beige because of the lighting.

I’m also sure the shower pan is the issue but the plumbing. Water floods out from beneath the shower dam into the rest of the bathroom.

Can I ask what specific tub did you go with? Hoping to finally do our master this spring. Thanks!

No help on the tile, but I'll throw out these thoughts -- while you're at it:

    - Double the storage niche

    - I see that you don't have towel bars within reach of the current shower -- that's a detail you'll want to fix -- pay attention to the direction the shower door hinges, as the door could prevent you from reaching your towels.

Thanks, we use a suction hook on the shower glass - there’s no wall within reach of the shower.

Updating this - we chose an elongated hexagon Zellige tile in pure white / puro blanco. Wish we had used a lighter grout. Did not know what a nightmare Zellige is to install and probably wouldn’t have chosen it if we had known. We couldn’t widen our niche because of pipes and other issues in the wall so we added a second tier.

That's the kind of thing your contractor should've pointed out to you. You can put towel bars on the back of the door adjacent to the shower, or you can build a pony-wall halfway up (which will also make the shower feel more enclosed /less like you're on display while you're showering), and you can put a towel bar on that pony wall.

Appreciate the feedback, but the bathroom was designed long before we moved in and remodel was limited to the shower itself because of a shower pan failure. The door adjacent to the shower on one side is a pocket door and the door on the other side is an exterior barn door. There’s no place to build a pony wall unless we want to have to leap over it to get to the toilet or into our bedroom. Sometimes we have to work with the space we have and a suction hook on the shower is a perfect solution for us.

Here’s the rest of the bathroom for reference. Not too worried about feeling on display in my own private primary bathroom 🙃
