Just looking for insight/ advice before committing. We are gutting a bathroom and adding a washer/ dryer. I’ve read thru a ton of posts and comments here and think Ive decided to go with a unitized, vented set up. Wondering why there are so few to choose from vs separate, stacked washers and dryers? I’ve always had a top load washer, and it seems bending down to load the washer would be annoying, no? Also, is an extra $3000 really worth it to get a speed queen? Thanks for your help.

I would think a single unit has a disavantage- if part breaks, you can't really replace it. With two seperate units, if one breaks, it can be replaces easier.

I guess since I’m purchasing both at the same time I wasn’t considering that! So maybe for the top load/ stacked, the GE is the way to go. For front load, separate machines. Still, you’d think they’d offer more unitized for the top load option. I think GE & Whirlpool is it.

You can buy the CR-recommended LG WM4000HWA, its matching vented dryer, and stacking kit for $1635. The LG WM3400CW set is even less at $1435.

I would go with the stackable LG's. LG has a better reliability record, and if either the washer or dryer breaks down beyond repair you can easily replace it without having to replace the whole unit.

I too would go for stackalbe separate units. I can't remember which lasts longer - but washer or dryer lasts much longer than the other. A single unit will necessitate getting rid of both at the same time.

I have an LG washtower. I live in an apartment and don't have room for stackables, need a single unit. I'm picky about my wash and it does a great job. It is nice that the controls are in the middle - you won't get that with stacking two units and you need to be tall to reach the controls. Or, have a step stool handy.

I was psyched to get a Speed Queen at my last home. I read how well they wash. I was incredibly disappointed. It did no better than my 20 year old Maytag that finally broke. Don't belive the hype.

(As an side, they are the only washing machine that can come apart and be reassembled in the home to get it through small doorways and down small staircases. I lived in Philly where spaces were narrow. Philly has the highest Speed Queen sales anywhere in the country.)

Thanks Kendrah:) So is your wash tower a ventless heat pump dryer? My original plan was to get the GE Ultrafast combo but from all I’ve read it sounds like constant maintenance to get damp wrinkled clothes. So I was going to ask our contractors to run a vent duct.
We have a full size washer/dryer in our basement. But I’m thinking with the new set closer to our bedrooms, I’ll probably be using them for the majority of our laundry.
I appreciate you all helping me decide!
