Remodel Kitchen Help

last year
last modified: last year

We bought a brick ranch built in the 1977. It has a pretty small kitchen and I'm looking for some help on the best way to lay things out. I've attached a screenshot of initial thoughts but it feels tight. The far right area has 2 windows so I can't use that space for appliances. Also, we really want a double oven because we cook a lot and have a large family. Thanks for any help.

A scaled drawing with all dimensions will help, windows, doors, around the island, appliances, cabinets thoughts, all these dimensions are really necessary. An idea of what you have now in the way of a layout, what can change on the way of plumbing and electric, etc..

I see what you have but I need to know if there is any way to expand the space a bit so seeing the whloe floor plan of the main floor is helpful. I never like an island that comes out of the kitchen space so I need pictures too. IMO the windows are causing many issues so is there a way to just make them higher off the floor or what is the height from the floor there , !10 ft wide kitchens cannot handel an island usually The fridge where you show it is not good. You could do a range and one wall oven under the counter to give you the same cooking space but more counter but I want to see that space where the windows are please . I assume you have a DR near this space so a bit more info please . Post all this info and pics here in comments or we will lose this post DO NOT START another post on this subject .

install a peninsula extending where you show double oven ......the open passage is about 11 feet.....save about 36-39 inches for walkway . so the peninsula can be 7 or 8 feet. how many seats do you want....place seating on the living room side maybe one or two stools on kitchen side if you need it...... Use the continuous counter you gain on this non window side of kitchen for sink dishwasheer and cooktop. use the wall on the right of your back door for oven stack and fridge. It would be wise to remove the smaller window and use the wall for a coffee bar or pantry etc. Otherwise a freestanding work cart can go opposite the fridge/ oven wall on the right side for extra space. Here are peninsulas…better than island

The window area of your space likely had table seating.. you can find smaller round pedestal tables to add to the mix if you desire.

Thanks for the replies. The picture I put in the original post was just an idea on how to lay the space out. Right now, we have completely gutted the space and are down to the studs. We cannot expand the space so we are going to work with what we have. The island does not have to extend into the living space. I just added it to give an idea of how it would look. The windows on the right side are not going to change. One is 6 ft wide by 5 ft tall and provides a ton of natural light. We are open to the idea of the peninsula instead of an island. Also, I updated the drawing with better better measurements on the left and right hand walls plus the window size

I'd avoid a square island. I was in a beach house with one and it was difficult to reach the center for cleaning and it ended up being useless space since we used the perimeter and didn't put things in the center.

What are behind the walls of this space. If it’s a space that cannot be opened. I would do an area for cooking with its own work station and a mini prep sink and fridge and the other side I would place your fridge, sink and pantry like a scullery. Does that make sense.

This small space 99 times out of 99 would have a range and counter instead of wall ovens. An induction range like a Frigidaire slide-in or more expensive Bosch industrial would be the easiest and least costly upgrade. Induction gives you the best performance and a counter look when not in use.

I would let go of the island and spend your time getting your appliances in the right spot - fridges can work well at the end of a counter run, just leave room between the fridge and the wall so you can fully open the doors (your fridge is in an awkward place in your diagram, see how it it overlaps the counter on the left)

That layout unfortunately reminds me of the original layout of my current kitchen. Tiny spots of counter dotted among awkwardly placed appliances, with the crowning glory being a wall oven that there wasn't really room for.

Start with abandoning the idea of an island. It doesn't fit, and is going to do nothing but push you towards a generally bad layout. If you need seating and/or as much workspace as possible, a sturdy table between the windows will work much better. Also consider closing in the opening to the (presumed) dining room if you are scraping for counterspace and storage. You want the wall space.

In other words, set the time machine back to 1977, and figure out what someone back then would do to solve your problems. The 2025 solutions aren't going to work without changing more of the house than you are prepared to do.

Its a terrible place for the frig. Add that space into your counter, and move the frig on the other side of the door, and just have a smaller counter at the end close to the sink.

Make the island rectangular and run it in the direction of the dishwasher/sink/counter.

Move the sink and dishwasher to the island. Have bar stools on the other side if the space is wide enough. The sink will then be facing a window.

Move the stove to the dishwasher/sink/counter wall. If you center the oven on that wall, then you will have counter space on both side for cooking.

Move the Refrigerator to when the double ovens are and move those down.

Another idea is to put the double oven on the wall with the oven and have panty on the refrigerator wall.
