Sort the mail as it comes in the door -- junk goes in recyling (90% of incoming mail). You can put a recyling basket/bin underneath the desk area. If you have to store paperwork there, get an attractive basket or bin and put it there. Set up all of your accounts online which will cut down on your paper tremendously.

Those tiny kitchen desks that were all the rage at one point never worked out as intended. Use the shelf for cookbooks, nicely stacked. If you don't use those, a beautiful piece of pottery or platter of fruit would look good. Nothing messy should go there.
