Gable detail add on

Can this type of detail be added to existing gable or is there any underlying work that has to be done?

    To properly retrofit this deep overhang onto an existing house (in the most structurally sound manner), you would have to remove about 4 feet of roofing and plywood roof sheathing and remove the outward-most couple of roof rafters in order to be able to install 'LADDER RAFTERS" that form the cantilever: 2/3 in and 1/3 out is the rule, with each of the ladder rafters nailed perpendicular to the 2nd or 3rd rafter forming the cantilevered overhang. A good builder should know how to execute what I just described.
