Here we are, the first signs of hosta life, good old clausa is not letting me down. By the middle of February I expect to see the first green out of the cataphylls with the first unfurling showing up late third week of February! YEAH!!!

'Jaws' has taken a few years to become comfortable here and it's finally starting to show its stuff!

'Ripple Effect' made such a nice display this morning I just HAD to photograph it...

There's something ethereal about "white Feather' this time of year...

I sure hope we're not following close behind. However, it was predicted that it would be 80 degrees today. I haven't seen the news, though. It's predicted to be that warm all week.

The problem being that we will still have another freeze. It never fails.

Well, after I posted the original picture we had an extended period of below freezing temperatures, like 13 nights, and we're not used to seeing that in Canada's banana belt. Needless to say thing were held back by mother nature because of that, BUT, I'm seeing progress...

This the same container as in the original post and I'm seeing green! It'll probably be another 10 days or so before I can expect to see them to begin unfurl.

Here's a larger container with clausa and I'm looking forward to see how many drainage holes will have shoots coming out of them in another month or so...

In an earlier post I mused about how many shoots of clausa I'd see coming out of the drainage holes in the pot. Thus far the answer appear to be at least 2, quite possibly more.

It's still early days though, so stay tuned...

I took ice cubes out to my garage Hostas and I see a couple of pips!! All is not lost……😊
It’s still too cold to take them outside because we still are having quite a chilly weather. Soon though.

they don't stay out..it's still too cold some nights..I have pots in the garage that I'm too lazy to move in and out for now..lol..

I moved my pots outside yesterday because it was 76! Today it’s 50 and misty. I am hoping I can leave them out at night but cover them with some cloths or plastic at night.

It looks like I now have 2 pots with shoots out the drainage holes. I may just cut those off, haven't decided yet...

The top of the larger pot is a lot more interesting though and it's looking as if clausa has won the race this year with 'Chinese sunrise' for which one's to show unfurled leaves first...

I have several 'Empress Wu', most in pots and this one in the ground. It's been there for a few years and it's starting to show signs of gaining some size this year. Just look at the diameter of this shoot: 1.5 inches! It'll be quite the size when it's finished!

This is most of the entire clump and I had to make sure I kept my chinese neighbour away so as not to tempt him with what would have looked to him like a very nice meal! He and his wife spent a few in years in Japan and they're only too familiar with Giboshi at the markets this time of year!
