Painting Help! Which walls & how far?

last year

We recently did a pretty big update in our basement, and are now finishing it off. Last big thing to do is the wall with the Ms. Pacman machine. We are adding a butcherblock bar to the blank wall, and we are considering painting this section black. I will also be getting a different cabinet for games under the dart board (or possibly leaving it empty, but it seems bare without something there).

Currently we have one wall that's black paneling, and we love how it turned out. Given this is a basement we aren't worried about it being too dark, but we have white blinds on the windows so I'm not sure about doing the entire basement in black. So, question is, will it look ok to paint this entire wall black - and should we also paint the wall with the doors & up the stairs black? There is a piece of wood on the top of the foundation wall adjacent to the stairs (at basement ceiling height) that would make a decent "break" for paint).

Wall(s) in question, along with the other walls in the room.

Here is one thought. Paint all of the walls black except for the window wall. Leave it as is.

Paint the ceiling a tan color. It just seems like a lot of white ceiling (for a basement) unless you like it white. Tan would go with the wood.

Here is a sketch...the colors are approx., not paint colors.

Here is a neutral from the carpet.

I feel like right now it makes sense from a design standpoint, because the black wall is also a different material; It feels like an accent and there are other points of black and brown in the room that tie it together.

I feel like if you continue the black as paint, but only to one other side of the room, it's going to start feeling a little unfinished or unbalanced. Unless you are also bringing the same material over and just doing that one spot behind another bar; this might make sense because it's anchoring another feature.

In my opinion with the rest of the room being light and bright and with a white ceiling, if you keep going with too much black it's going to start to feel out of place or unfinished, like you are halfway done. You would get to the point that you would just need to commit to the dark room completely; you could color drench trim/walls and maybe even ceiling to fully embrace the look and feel this gives.

We used black doors and cabinets as accent against white walls.

Go all black you will love it!..for a basement it will make such a sophisticated cozy space

I would paint just the wall where the pacman machine is, so the machine blends into the corner. It is nice to leave the wall with the board leaning against white to reflect light into the room.

I agree with painting the ceiling a tint, but I would choose a white with blue undertone, like Behr Day Spa. Looks like a cool space... I would also paint the wall behind the framed jerseys... a deep color, not black.

Well, I'm glad there's no consensus at least! Ha! Makes me feel like my struggle with what to do is real.

Our (builder) paint is SW Drift of Mist, which is what's on the walls now. Trim & ceiling is SW Pure white. I feel like adding more colors to the mix might make it look haphazard?

I would be open to painting the ceiling but would I need to paint the trim & doors then too?

If I went all in on the black everywhere, would it look OK with the current window trim & blinds?

Originally I had wanted to do this wall in paneling as well but DH nixed that idea - plus it cost a bit for us to do the paneling we have now - our contractor was meticulous in cutting, which is a good thing, but also it ended up taking a long time for him to do it.

@tracefloyd thanks for those! I actually think more black looks pretty good, and might consider doing the window wall too! Worried about the trim & ceiling being different though...

Unfortunately can't change the white windows.

My pleasure. I think the white trim is fine and no one has mentioned it.

Here are two opposing blue accent walls, the window wall which is a great accent wall, the board wall, and maybe the wall behind the stairs in blue to contrast the panels.

The far wall and pac man corner walls in black.

I don't mind dark walls, but with all of your furnishings already dark and painting the walls dark the only light color you have left is the carpet and the trim/ceiling. Contrast is what draws attention. Do you want the main attraction in the room - the place where the eye is drawn to be the trim, floor and ceiling? Everything else blends into the walls.

@Jennifer Hogan I guess I would say the TV and fireplace (when on) would be the main attraction, and there's usually not a time we aren't down here when the TV isn't on (TV is backlit and fireplace also has multiple color settings so it is pretty dramatic).

But I get your point, and will consider it. Otherwise what do you think about the wall I'm specifically asking about? Do you think that should stay light as well?

Aside from paint - here is what my vision is for this wall. Our bar is about 13" wide and I will put it at counter height. DH has a ton of baseball cards, and while I know those are kind of out of fashion these days, I still think it's cool to display, so I'm showing one frame that holds 36 cards, or two frames that hold 9 or 15 each.

I also found battery powered pendants or battery powered sconces. I don't really want to run more electrical here and these lights will only be used occasionally. I'm showing the pendants but the sconces would be sized similarly. I just have to avoid the smoke detector.

Would anyone care to provide thoughts on these? THANK YOU!!!!

I would keep all the walls light except the one that you currently have dark. It is a great accent wall and draws your attention. Keep it as the focus of the room.

More isn't always better, often it is just more.

I do love Home Interiors office, but again, note the white chairs, curtains the light artwork, the area rug with the great pattern, the ornate patterns on the windows, the rich woodwork around the windows. . .

Not the same space as you have.

Take these away and is it as impressive?

The design has to fit your space and work with your furnishings.

Yes I really think it will look amazing and you have windows! white trim and doors..off white carpeting and white ceilings! add off white drapes to the windows to give a finished look…add wood and leather..it will be FAB!

I like the white curtain panels in Jennifer's rendering. Very nice room. I think it is impressive in its own way. Maybe you could fit a wingback chair. They are very comfortable.

Here is all black with white drapes sketch. I agree with home interiors to tie in the white trim. It will look good.

Well we went all in, and are really happy with it. Still need to replace outlets and possibly paint baseboard. Thanks for your help! (Second photo... We used battery operated pendant lights and only had one light charged, and the adjacent wall wasn't painted yet).
