ISO Advice to decorate around Fireplace insert

We installed a fireplace insert several years ago and I've always felt it is too plain looking for the room. A small roof leak caused some drywall damage so it spurred me to look for ideas to design around the insert, since I need to repair the drywall anyway. Whatever design is chosen needs to remain mostly flush with the wall (I don't want to discrupt the baseboard or carpet at the base) but I am looking for ideas to decorate around the insert to spruce it up a bit. I do not want to go all the way to the ceiling because the room has exposed rafters and I like that look, but I was thinking some sort of texture around it and maybe add a simple wood mantle. A TV will not be mounted above it. Would love some ideas. All the walls of the room are white except for one small accent wall which is kelly green.

Have you considered tiling part of the wall? Here’s something I found when googling ”fireplace tile.” I can’t say I’m fond of this particular tile choice, and you wouldn’t have to continue it on the floor, but the rest of the concept (including mantel) might work for you.

Thank you both for the tile suggestions. Yes, that mantel is exactly what I am thinking of. simple block of wood. I guess I need to go to the tile store and get some samples and see what looks good around the surround. THANK YOU for responding. I was sort of stymied and I do appreciate the photos and suggestions.

Good luck with your choice. It's not a small one. If you read much here you see all the new owners wanting to paint or swap out the brick/tile they inherited. It's really what I consider a permanent choice vs a couch or lamp. When we were doing ours we found the gorgeous green tile I was sooo tempted by. Waverly vines were my curtains and couch cushions...but I knew the green could tire fast. We ended up with a stone that was much more neutral. How daring are you? We ended up selling the home a few years later and I imagine the new owners were happy to not find green tile....
