Help! Should I Exchange My New Leather Sofas??

last year

We ordered these and they do not match the swatch. Much more red-orange in person! I’m not 100% loving the color and we have a few days to decide if we return for a different leather color.

What do you think??

On my monitor they look very pumpkin orange....not a color I would want. What other choices do you have?

  • last year

Here’s the swatch of what I’d exchange for. More of brownish colored leather.

  • last year

I would keep the sofas and re paint the room.

I think they look great. The color is much more interesting than the brown & gives more options for added touches of interesting color against them. Added touches of color against the usual brown leather color results in seeing only the added touches - not like the great combo of squashy / pumpkiny color you got. Also think the color is fab against the charcoal walls - a spark of happy. The brown against charcoal - yawn /meh. Same thing against the brick - wow! The brown - okayyy. Pretty nice against wood floor & rug too. Try to decide if it’s only that the color is different than expected that’s the issue. Leave the room for a long time & then come back & try to assess as if seeing for first time. Would store give any credit for ’miss’ color instead of return / exchange? Store can’t sell as new if returned. If they would do that would it affect how you feel about color?

I like them , a lot more interesting than brown. Can we see the whole room The light wood looks great too. I would keep them I think you will grow to love that color over boring brown that everyone has.I ahve often found that great things come out of things you thought were wrong .

Can you list the product name so we can check specs and colors?

My husband bought a car with very expensive leather seats many years ago. We were shocked when the car was delivered that they were very orange, not at all what he expected. I thought they were awful. Of course, the car was ours, but here’s the great news, much like a brand new baseball glove, the color changed losing the intense orange tones and settled down into a beautiful color and it really didn’t take long. By about 6 mos it had quieted. I think your sofas are striking in your room. I would definitely keep them, and there is a chance they may slightly mellow ( who knows, that might make you sad by then…). I think you will love that you didn’t choose hohum down the road.

I really like them - brown couches are everywhere. I think if you embrace the orange-ness you could really have some fun with these and wind up with a gorgeous room.

I’d swap the rug out for something brighter, maybe a blue…

  • last year

I think the room as a whole looks smashing!

  • last year

Oh boy....no I couldn't live with that. Orange as accent color can be nice, but not that large of an expanse of orange leather.

Regardless, It's not what you ordered and you're not 100% sold on the color. If you don't love the color, send them back -- leather is too $$$ to not really love what your purchased.

    I think they are beautiful!

Very orange on my computer, I couldn't live with that so I would exchange for the more brownish one.

I see them as a saddle color….. I still love them over the dull brown. Based on comments & likes, the majority favors the color over what was expected. I hope @tacya will come back & tell us what their decision was.

I like swatch better. Pinky orange sofas on my screen. I would return them. They are not a trendy cognac color, not even a saddle, no brown, no terracotta...In some time they would look even more dated.

  • last year

I'd exchange them for the more brownish swatch, which would harmonize more with the bricks and rug. I can't help but seeing Halloween with orange and black.

I still want to save hassles with return.

Try to use soft yellow light, I bet it would look good as on your last photo.

It comes down to a gut feeling, do you like their impact in the room overall. No right or wrong, as you can see opinions are 1/2 and 1/2. I think they make a statement and suit your room really well.

The color swatch seems to have more of a cognac undertone and I’d be holding up lots of shades next to each other to compare, to ensure you get what you want (if returning yours).

    More of a brown undertone:

Thank you all for your responses! We were out of town and will return today to see how we feel about them after being away.

More information about them: They are from BenchMade Modern. The color is Marfa Terra and the style is Catalina bench seat, 95”. The color we are considering is Carmel. They are very comfortable!

If I choose to exchange these, they will pick up and refund me the full amount paid, minus shipping cost. We would have to pay shipping for new couches. We purchased during a Black Friday sale, so after the price difference and shipping, it would be about $1k extra to exchange for a new color leather.

I would return them no question! You want to LOVE your purchase the minute it arrives..and not have to change the surroundings to make it work.

No question this would be so much better with your rug, brick and black accents.

Link Catalina Transitional Sofa with Bench Cushion | BenchMade Modern I looked at the specs for this product. I didn't see info on the source and quality of the leather. Does it use any bonded material on any surface? That begins to peel in 5 years. I'd avoid that material. Here's more info about different grades of leather from a different manufacturer. Palliser Quality???? Help please!

About the refund. Your card company can help you get a complete refund, including shipping.

I love them. They look great in the space and against the darker walls. They really compliment the flooring and coffee table too. It looks like a photo from a magazine. I’d totally keep them.

  • last year

I like the swatch if you decided to return the current sofas but my concern is how loose/stretch out the leather in that seat area already looks in the one picture with the accent pillow. How long have you had those sofas?

  • last year

I adore the color.. sassy clean modern!🎸

I think they look great! It’s a beautiful room. Just for the sake of brainstorming, what if you kept one leather but switched the other out for a fabric?

  • last year

UPDATE: we are officially exchanging these sofas for caramel leather. They will exchange when the new ones arrive in 3-4 weeks, so we won’t be without sofas during that time.

Thank you all for your advice!

Will you please come back to this thread and post a pic of the new ones when they arrive? Beautiful space!

It's a star in the room! A showstopper! Brown can bring balance. I do love it, NOT boring!

Hurray! Thanks for the update. Please post before and afters. Very accomodating of them to make sure you are not without seat.

You have an classic dyed Italian pull-up leather on those sofas, I have sold thousands of them over nearly four decades. Anilines are dyed, not painted. That means they will never match the swatch - ever. Too much variance! Each batch of hides takes the dyes differently, and its likely you will run into the same scenario should you return and swap. Only finished leathers or semi-anilines will be accurate to the swatch, since they are top-coat painted. One thing anyone should do with pure anilines if they are targeting a swatch is to request a CFA (Cutting for Appoval). That will be typically a 6" x 6" piece of hide from the batch to show you the dye lot. If you decided to swap out, then perhaps do that or get a finished leather instead that will be accurate to the swatch. I like the color (I have similar in my home), but that's up to you.

Of more concern to me is photo # 3, For new sofas, the amount of excess leather on the seat cushion is severe. If you can grasp the leather in your fingers, its too loose and needs to be re-tailored so its tighter. A bench seat always has those issues because of the run length, however if these are new I still think its excessive. As a dealer, if that arrived to my store with that much looseness, I would have returned it to the factory. If it was tight when it landed at your house and has loosened up in a few weeks to that degree it may always be an issue. That happens when the piece is made of Cowhide (from the female cow) instead of GR A Steer hide, which has far less stretch. Of course, the maker has to pay more for GR A Steer hide. If you decide to return, I would suggest you swap for a model with three individual seat cushions for the shorter runs on the hides per cushion.

This kind of leather will fade with exposure to sunlight UV rays and get lighter and more bleached out - be mindful of that for the one sofa that is on the window side. They can always be re-burnished to a darker tone, but that's not a good DIY project and should be done by someone to has experience doing so. Good luck.

The KEEPING ROOM, your response to this dilemma is the most knowledgeable and complete that I have read in a long time. I never knew any of that pertinent information concerning leathers. You must have been a treasure to the business in your working years and I imagine your expertise is strongly missed. Perhaps you should re-think retirement and hang out a shingle as a 'consultant' for those considering leather purchases!

I am also gratified that you mentioned the amount of 'stretch' in the close-up photo of the seat cushion. It seemed unusually extreme for a brand new piece of furniture. 'Alwaysonestepbehind' mentioned this as well and it is something for Tacya to seek reassurance about from the manufacturer.

Thanks for the kind words! I retired last June and closed my store, but stop by here from time to time to see if I can assist here and there. I had a very strong and loyal customer base, however at age 70 it was time to stop unpacking sofas. Always glad to share my knowledge.

Agree^^^ . Also @The KEEPING ROOM ... wonderful information, great for anyone in the market for leather furniture, best information I have ever heard.
