Red maple inosculation

A double-trunk red maple showing "inosculation", a word I wasn't aware of. Not sure I can imagine how this happens other than sprouts from one trunk growing out then "into" the adjacent trunk, and that's what the definition of the word says.

Interesting (although not always desirable) when it happens naturally but can become a quite dramatic, sculptural effect when done intentionally.

A few years ago, while camping at Glendalough state part one summer, there was a white oak of some sort. It had two trunks from the ground to about 4 ft' up, at that point they melded into one trunk with a single crown. A little like bens tree but no other connections. Looked like it was standing on two legs. ;-)
