Where would you move the laundry? Having the laundry off the kitchen is very convenient. I have had laundry in the basement, in the garage, by the upstairs bedroom and in the room off the kitchen. I MUCH prefer off the kitchen. I never forget to rotate the loads. I always know when the cycle is finished.

It looks like you have a nice pantry surrounding the refrigerator.

My advice is to live in the house and see how it works before you move the laundry. If you need additional kitchen storage, perhaps you can add storage to the laundry room.

I was thinking of moving laundry by master bath where wic is now. I would make office in master bedroom a closet.

Like @auntthelma, I've had laundry in every conceivable place -- currently in the basement =[. I've had the laundry room between the the garage and kitchen in a couple of homes and loved it. It's great not only for multi-tasking (laundry while cooking) but for storing mops, brooms and cleaning supplies, handling dirty jobs (pet messes, cleaning tools, etc.), and staging items that need to leave the house.

Moving the laundry to the owner's bedroom area could work if you're the only person in the household doing laundry. If you have children, though, eventually you'll want them to do their own laundry and probably won't want them and their dirty clothes in your space. I'd live with it for awhile before making a decision.

I find often houses have a way of telling you how they function and not always the way you want. I always say wait 3-6 monhs before deciding any major change . I love my main floor laundry but I also love alarge pantry if done right thta means nothing but food and maybe a fridge in there , no brooms , mops or anything like that.IMO just wait .

Living with it for several months before starting to tear into things is always a good idea - sometimes what you think will be annoying about a layout doesn't actually bother you much, and vice versa. If you do a lot of laundry it may indeed make life easier to have the washer and dryer close to the bedrooms, but if it's just once a week then the longer trek may not bother you.

My thoughts as I consider the floorplan are wondering about that interesting entrance path from the garage - seems like the laundry room is functioning more like a mudroom/buffer between the dirty outside and clean inside. Would it be better to move the entrance from garage into, say, the breakfast nook, which looks more like a glorified hallway to me anyway. Having a kitchen as a hallway to the rest of the house is suboptimal to say the least. Especially when it's long and narrow already - your layout options are limited and traffic cuts through your work zone. If you relocated that garage door and turned the kitchen into a cul-de-sac instead of a thoroughfare, you could potentially make the kitchen layout an L with narrow island/no seating. Put a table in front of the long window seat instead.

But first, live there and see what you truly like and don't like!

So there is a lot to unpack here.

Since you are just buying the house, you have no idea if this layout works for you or not. The laundry may be in a great place compared to the alternatives around the house.

The recommendation to folks is to fix up everything else in the house you may want done right away - paint rooms, change/fix flooring ( not in kitchen or laundry ) , repair stairs, update mechanicals, change lighting, update bathrooms etc.

Then just live with the kitchen for 6 months. This will give you a chance to see if this layout works for you or if you really dislike it.

Initial thoughts - I would save money to raise that large window, move the sink over there, close the smaller window and have a nice cooking area. Move the door to the laundry over and have a nice L shaped kitchen and an island.

If you wait and live there, then you can take you time to plan and research and get your budget together.

I like your idea of turning the office into a walk in closet. I would then use the wic in the bathroom as seasonal storage and linen closet. Or, maybe my closet and your closet. It is a luxury to have enough closet space.

Echoing the advice to wait and live with it for awhile, so that you can make better informed decisions about changes. Bonus: living with crummy function/layouts helps you appreciate the eventual changes sooooo much more! :)

I thought it might be nice if you could change the office to a 1/2 bath with laundry, remove the 1/2 bath in living room. rearrange mater bath and closet. (seems like wasted space or inefficient.)
